The Karuk Tribal Elders Program is offering a special opportunity for eligible Elders to attend the 59th Annual California Native American Day at the State Capitol in Sacramento!

Nine Elders will be selected through a lottery:

3 from Yreka
3 from Happy Camp
3 from Orleans

The lottery drawing will take place at the 27th Annual Karuk Tribal Reunion on September 19, 2026. You do not have to be present to win, and advance sign-ups are open now.

The trip will take place September 24–26, 2026, with California Native American Day on Friday, September 25.

Karuk Tribe Vice Chairman Kenneth Brink and staff welcomed Jacob Huls, Policy Advisor for Senator Alex Padilla. Mr. Huls visited Orleans and Somes Bar to learn about tribal traditional ecological knowledge and cultural burning, and discussed the impacts of dam removal and the continued importance of flows for the river and salmon while floating along the Klamath River near Katimiîn and Ameekyáaraam.

We want to thank Jacob Huls for taking the time to visit us and extend our appreciation to Senator Padilla for championing the Katimiîn and Ameekyáaraam Sacred Lands Act, which restored over 1,000 acres of ancestral Karuk land into trust for the traditional and customary uses of the Karuk Tribe, and for his continued support on tribal issues.

Last week, the Karuk Tribe and the Indigenous Stewardship Network (ISN) cohosted an SB 310 Cultural Burning Agreement Workshop at the First Annual Indigenous Stewardship Network Convening for interested Tribal members and representatives who want their Tribe to also have an SB 310 cultural burning agreement. It was an exciting conversation. Several common misconceptions were addressed, including the misconception that a tribal governance process has to be established prior to the agreement being signed. We want to support other Tribes to be able to create SB 310 agreements for themselves, and look forward to holding future SB 310 workshops this fall.

The ISN Convening itself also featured several panels that highlighted Karuk leadership in Indigenous stewardship and cultural fire, including a panel on SB 310 with Bill Tripp, a panel on re-matriating fire with Ruby King, a panel on youth leadership with Ryan Reed, and a panel on art in fire with Frank Lake, among many other wonderful panels and conversations.

AB 2218 is headed to Governor Newsom’s desk following strong Tribal advocacy and unanimous support in the California Legislature.

California legislation aimed at giving Tribal governments a stronger voice in decisions affecting water and aquatic ecosystems is headed to Governor Newsom’s desk after clearing the Senate on August 25.

The Opioid Awareness Summit hosted by the Karuk Human Services department brought together Tribal, county, and state partners in a unified commitment to protect our people from opioids, fentanyl, alcohol, and other substances harming our communities.

Grounded in prayer and cultural strength, the summit's mission was to deepen understanding, strengthen collaboration, and honor our shared responsibility to safeguard our families. Tribal leaders, HIDTA and ORS representatives, county behavioral health teams, treatment providers, and recovery staff stood together to show that real change happens when every system works in alignment.

Each presentation highlighted how prevention, treatment, harm reduction, cultural healing, and data-driven strategies form a continuum of care that respects Tribal sovereignty and community wellness. The strong representation from so many agencies demonstrated the urgency of this work and the respect held for the Karuk Tribe’s leadership. Most importantly, the summit affirmed that healing is possible when cultural knowledge, professional expertise, and compassion come together.

This gathering was more than an event; it was a declaration of unity and a commitment to continue our good work for the well-being of future generations.
