Happy Valley Youth Council

Happy Valley Youth Council We are a group of young people who have been chosen to represent the City of Happy Valley.

In 2010, the City embarked on a mission to involve local high school students in a forum where they could exchange diverse opinions on matters of importance to their peer group in a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere. Professionally moderated, this first Youth Town Hall captured big ideas and enthusiasm, and a follow-up work session led to the groundwork of the City’s first Youth Council. Student

leaders from local high schools were selected to work under the guidance of city government representatives, to give teens a voice and a stake in their Happy Valley community. This advisory board of teen advocates consists of eleven members who must be of high school age and reside in the City of Happy Valley. Vacancies on the panel are filled by the election of new members as voted on by the sitting Youth Council. Youth Councilors collaborate on ideas and goals to enhance their community, and look to the city’s elected leaders - Mayor and City Council - for mentorship and assistance. Monthly council meetings are held to attend to the business of organizing Youth Council events and planning their service and participation in other community events sponsored by the City. Ongoing community goals include drug and alcohol abuse awareness through annual Rx Drug Turn-In Days and a Teen Driver Safety Event. To identify other current teen issues, they continue with the founding activity of a yearly Youth Town Hall where they work with other local teens to develop new ideas for projects to enhance their community. Their motto is PEER2 which stands for “positively influence, protect, empower, enrich, encourage, engage, represent and respect” the teens in their community.

Members of the Happy Valley Youth Council just returned from an incredible week in Washington, D.C., attending the National League of Cities Congressional Conference—and wow, what an experience!
Over three packed days of interactive workshops on housing, how city government really works, and the ins and outs of policy making. It was amazing to learn how decisions are made and how youth voices can influence them.
One of the best parts? Meeting other youth councils from across the country. We shared ideas, swapped stories, and talked about the real issues we’re addressing back home in Happy Valley. It was inspiring to see how many young people are stepping up to make a difference in their communities. Oh yeah…we also got to do some sightseeing!

What an incredible day at the Capitol for the Happy Valley Youth Council!

We started the day by visiting Representative April Dobson, where we had the opportunity to ask questions, share our perspectives, and learn more about how decisions are made at the state level. Later in the day, we had the privilege to also meet with Representative Lamar Wise and continued the conversation about the legislative process and what it means to serve our communities.

The highlight of the day was an unforgettable experience made possible an extended courtesy of Senator Christine Drazan. Not only did she take the time to meet with us, but she also arranged for a special shout-out and invited a few of our council members onto the Senate floor to see the legislative process up close. This was a rare opportunity, as the Senate floor is typically reserved for senators only and we are so grateful to have witnessed it in action.

Seeing state government at work in real time gave us a deeper understanding of leadership, civic responsibility, and public service. We are thankful to our state leaders for taking the time to invest in youth and for giving us such a meaningful experience.

We’re proud to represent Happy Valley and excited to keep learning and serving our community!

We had a blast at last night's Youth Town Hall. Over 90 youth filled the library community room to engage and learn all about civic engagement. How can you get involved in your community? We had presenters from boys team charity, Happy Valley League, National Charity League, Inc - Sunnyside Chapter, LaSalle's National Honor Society, Nelson High School's Key Club, JROTC, Clackamas County, Oregon - Sunrise Community Coalition, and members from the Oregon National Guard - Oregon Military Department. We extend our sincere gratitude to our speakers, West Linn's Mayor Rory Bialostosky, Thomas T Joseph of Rotary Club of Clackamas, and to our own City Council President, Joshua Callahan. All three speakers shared their journey and inspirational stories on the importance of giving back and getting involved. Thank you all for your time and dedication to making our community a better place 💛
