Great job Officer Brown, Officer Mansfield, and Officer Bibb! The Chikaming Township Police Department demonstrated its continued commitment to the River Valley Community by seeking donations to support River Valley School District children and families in need. Through that effort, the department provided 12 backpacks filled with essential school supplies, helping to ensure that children begin the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

**For Immediate Dissemination**

On August 18 at approximately 9:56 a.m., the Chikaming Township Police Department was dispatched to a vehicle-versus-train crash in the 14000 block of Red Arrow Highway. While responding, officers were advised that the vehicle was occupied on fire and was fully engulfed. The Chikaming Township Fire Department and New Buffalo Township Fire Department were also dispatched and quickly extinguished the fire.

When officers arrived, they were advised that an Amtrak train traveling southbound had struck a vehicle traveling westbound at the East Road crossing near Red Arrow Highway.

Officers were able to identify the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle as 72-year-old Paul Rizzo of Lakeside, Michigan (Chikaming Township).

The crash remains under investigation, and no further details are available at this time.

Assisting agencies included the Berrien County Sheriff's Office Road Patrol and Accident Investigation Team, Berrien County Weighmaster, Berrien County Road Department, New Buffalo Police Department, Michigan State Police Motor Carrier, Amtrak Police, Chikaming Township Fire Department, New Buffalo Township Fire Department, CSX, and Amtrak.

Chikaming Township Police Department Community Backpack & School Supply Drive 📚

As another school year approaches, we have an opportunity to come together as a community and help local students start the year with confidence. A donation box has been placed in the lobby of the Chikaming Township Police Department during normal business hours, M-F 8am-4pm (closed 12-12:30 for lunch).

At 10:06 p.m. on 07/28/2026 Chikaming Township Police were dispatched to a residence near Warren Woods Rd and Red Arrow Hwy. in Lakeside (Berrien County) for a missing person. The officer was advised that a 79-year-old woman with dementia was missing from the home and was last seen at 7:45 p.m.

Officers from several jurisdictions and Chikaming Township Fire Department personnel began searching the area. Berrien County Sheriff’s Office K9 was called in to assist and drones were also deployed.

The woman was located near a business along Red Arrow Hwy., in good health, by the Bridgman Police Department and she was transported back to her residence.

The Chikaming Township Police Department was assisted by the Chikaming Township Fire Department, The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and K9 Units, the Pokagon Tribal Police Department, the Bridgman Police Department, the New Buffalo Police Department, Great Lakes Drone Company, and Berrien County Public Safety Communications Center.

🎒 Chikaming Township Police Department Community Backpack & School Supply Drive 📚

As another school year approaches, we have an opportunity to come together as a community and help local students start the year with confidence. A donation box has been placed in the lobby of the Chikaming Township Police Department during normal business hours.
