National Police Week is a nationwide observance held each May to recognize the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who protect communities across the country. The week also honors officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, with May 15 designated as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

PRESS RELEASE

On April 20, 2026, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Officer Mansfield conducted a traffic stop on eastbound I-94 near the 12-mile marker. During the stop, 49 suspected fraudulent and stolen checks were recovered with a total value exceeding $560,000. The checks originated out of Texas, and four individuals were taken into custody. Officer Brown assisted during the investigation.

The case remains under active investigation. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Update:

On Monday, September 8, 2025, a body was recovered from a pond located on the Arlington Metals property. The individual has been identified as Charles Zalewski, 48, of Ohio. The circumstances surrounding Mr. Zalewski’s death remain under investigation.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on September 8, 2025, Deputy Chief Roe was dispatched to Arlington Metals in Sawyer, Michigan, following a report of a body discovered in a pond on the property. Upon arrival and further investigation, responding units confirmed the presence of a deceased individual.

At this time, the identity of the individual has not been determined. The circumstances surrounding the death remain under active investigation.
We ask that anyone who may have information related to this incident contact Deputy Chief Roe at 269-469-3245.

August 18, 2025

Press Release

On August 18, 2025, at approximately 1:06 a.m., Officer Carson Taylor was dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 94 near the 8-mile marker. Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Taylor observed that the vehicle had left the roadway on the north (ditch) side and come to rest among a group of trees. The passenger of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The identity of the driver and the deceased passenger are being withheld pending family notification.This incident remains under active investigation.

Our agency would like to thank the Chikaming Township Fire Department, New Buffalo Township Fire Department, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, and the Baroda-Lake Township Police for their assistance at the scene.

As we gather to celebrate our nation’s independence, we would like to remind everyone of the regulations regarding fireworks within Chikaming Township. In accordance with Chikaming Township Ordinance §145, fireworks may be discharged from June 29, 2025, through July 4, 2025, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. Additionally, if July 5, 2025, falls on a Friday or Saturday, fireworks are also permitted during these same hours.
Please note that the use of fireworks is strictly prohibited on any public beach.
As a community of good neighbors, we encourage everyone to be mindful of the impact fireworks may have on others, including noise levels and the potential for debris to fall onto neighboring properties. Your consideration helps ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for all.
