The Harbor Beach Lighthouse is Looking for Volunteers
The Harbor Beach Lighthouse has stood at the entrance of the Harbor Beach harbor of refuge for 140 years as a welcoming beacon to ships seeking refuge from Lake Huron storms. The historic structure is no longer an active Coast Guard navigational marker, rather it now serves as a reminder of our areas historic maritime heritage.
The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society, a volunteer group, has worked at preserving the 1885 lighthouse for three decades turning it into an award-winning lighthouse experience on the Great Lakes. Each summer the offshore lighthouse hosts hundreds of visitors who enjoy riding the tour boat through the harbor, exploring the newly re-constructed fog signal building/ maritime museum, and climbing the lighthouse tower to the breathtaking, 360-degree view from the gallery deck.
The Lighthouse Preservation Society is looking for volunteers to assist our guests during tours of the lighthouse this summer. No special knowledge about the lighthouse is needed, rather we are looking for volunteers who enjoy interacting with people and sharing one of Harbor Beach’s treasures. Tour guides can volunteer as often as they are able, whether that is each week or only a few weeks of the tour season.
If you have an interest in volunteering, please call or text Tammy at 989-550-1988 for more information.
Lighthouse tours are available Saturday mornings (from 9am – 12pm) throughout the summer, starting June 7th and ending August 30th. Tours depart from the Harbor Beach Municipal Marina, and they cost $30/person. Advance reservations are highly recommended; please visit the lighthouse website at:
