🌪️ A Severe Thunderstorm Warning with a "Tornado Possible" tag indicates an elevated tornado threat. Residents should take "Tornado Possible" storms very seriously. Sunday night's into Monday morning's event is an excellent example of why. At the time of the tornadoes (plural) we were fully under a "Severe Thunderstorm Warning, with Tornado Possible".
The tag is used when radar signatures and/or environmental conditions suggest tornado potential, but warning criteria for a Tornado Warning have not yet been met.
It's not "just a thunderstorm warning".
✅ A tornado can easily form, cause damage, and dissipate between radar updates.
⚠️ Radar is not truly "real time." There are delays from:
-Radar scan completion
-Data transmission / Processing / Forecaster analysis
-Warning issuance
-Delivery to phones, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, etc.
-And if your watching it on an internet stream, it can be delayed up to another 2 minutes.
🏚️ When you see "Tornado Possible" in a warning, it's time to pay very close attention to weather conditions and have multiple ways to receive alerts, maybe go ahead and get into your safe-space / storm shelter, especially at night.
