On November 26, 2025 at 815pm our dispatch center received a 911 call reporting a car into a tree on fire in Hardwick center. Hardwick Fire, Hardwick- New Braintree Police were dispatched to the scene. Mutual aid fire was requested from New Braintree and Barre.

Hardwick Fire Deputy Chief Gaumond and Hardwick Police Detective Almstrom arrived on scene and were able to rescue the sole occupant from the burning vehicle. Deputy Chief Gaumond, FF Gurney and Det. Almstrom then began medical treatment on the sole occupant while waiting for Barre EMS to arrive. The driver was transported to the hospital for treatment.

This crash is still under investigation by the Hardwick New Braintree Police Department and accident recon. I'd like to thank and give recognition to our team of dedicated individuals who put their lives on the line and are willing to risk everything to save what is often times a complete stranger. I commend the joint response and teamwork from all departments that responded to the incident. Without their quick thinking and action this would have no doubt resulted in tragedy.

These two men deserve some recognition. On Wednesday night at the motor vehicle accident/ fire. New Braintree/ Hardwick Police Detective Almstorm and Deputy Fire Chief Gaumond rescued the driver from the vehicle! Excellent work by both men!

On Friday October 3rd, 2025, I had the pleasure of picking up the new Hardwick Engine 1 from Bulldog Fire Apparatus. Department members put in extra hours, mostly of their own time, over the weekend to get the Engine in service and ready for calls. The members of the Department and I personally would like to thank everyone involved in the process of planning, purchasing and bringing this apparatus home and getting it finished. It truly takes a village to make a small Town Department run.

Most importantly, I'd like to thank the residents of Hardwick for their continued support for the Fire Department and their continued investment in the safety of our firefighters and the Town of Hardwick as a whole!

I look forward to having an open house at the department soon and inviting everyone up to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment. Details on the open house will follow soon.

Respectfully,

Chief Joshua Pease

A second alarm brush assignment was requested bringing in mutual aid from surrounding communities. Cheif Pease was also advised of a well involved shed fire. Chief Pease took incident command of the entire incident and assigned mutual aid company's subdivisions of each separate fire. A third alarm brush assignment was requested. In total 5 separate brush fires were active over an approximate 3 mile stretch of railroad tracks. The structure fire and immediate danger to houses was mitigated quickly by responding units. A forestry task force was requested to respond to the incident for addional manpower and equipment. All of the fires were contained at approximately 1400 Hrs. Overhaul of the fires was completed and all fire units cleared the scene around 1600 Hrs. No injuires to firefighters or citizens were reported throughout the incident. Approximately 4.6 acres burned. This incident is still under investigation, however a preliminary cause was from a passing train.

I personally would like to thank the hardwork and dedication from our Department, mutual aid partners from around the state, Local and State law enforcement, the DCR, New Braintree Dispatch, EMS and rehab units on scene and members of the community who stopped to bring water and snacks for everyone involved. This multifaceted and complex incident would have been impossible to accomplish without it! I'd also like to give a special thanks to the Old Furnace General Store for allowing our command post and rehab to be located in there parking lot and grass area.
