The Kentucky State Police notified Harlan County Public Schools Chief of Police Matt Cope this weekend of a phone call reporting an alleged comment by a Harlan County High School student indicating an intent to bring a weapon to school.

The Kentucky State Police, in partnership with Harlan County Public Schools, conducted an immediate and thorough investigation into the report. Following the investigation, officials determined that the allegation was unfounded.

We greatly appreciate our partnership with the Kentucky State Police and their continued commitment to the safety and security of our schools. The safety of our students, staff, and school communities remains a top priority, and we will continue to take all reports concerning school safety seriously.

Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP), a merit-based program that takes the most outstanding high school students from around the country to Washington, D.C., for a week-long study of the federal government and the people who lead it.

Two Kentucky high school students will be selected this fall as delegates and will each receive a $12,500 college scholarship in the name of the U.S. Senate, with encouragement to continue coursework in history, government and public affairs.
