The temperatures are dropping, and this fall ANC Library is seeking donations of new or clean, gently used cold weather garments and outerwear in all sizes. Donation bins are located in the Library and lobby of It Thinks for Itself (Library/Tech Building). These donations will be available all to browse once we've collected a few more items. Please help spread the word!

For some folks, harvest season brings hours and hours of canning, freezing, and drying to preserve crops for the colder months ahead. But if youโ€™re looking for a crop that stores well all on its own, look no further than winter squash! Winter squash are versatile, nutritious, and can store for months. Another bonusโ€”you can still save seed from winter squash that has been in storage! If you have winter squash growing in your garden or from a local market, weโ€™ve written a step-by-step guide about how to harvest, cure, store, and use winter squash.

Want to know more about seed saving? Join us at the library from 1-2PM on Thursday, September 18 for our Fall Seed Saving Workshop with our partners from MSU-Extension, Fort Belknap Reservation Extension Office and Montana Indigenous Food Sovereignty Initiative!

Some crops, such as cucumbers, need to remain on the plant long past the point of fresh eating to allow the seeds to fully mature. Cucumbers will continue to grow beyond their market-mature size as their seeds develop, eventually changing color from green to yellow or orange and losing firmness. It is best to wait several weeks after this color change before extracting the seeds to make sure the seeds have reached full maturity.
