Beidler Forest Audubon Center & Sanctuary

Beidler Forest Audubon Center & Sanctuary Come walk on our 1.75 mile boardwalk that takes you into the middle of an old-growth portion of Four Holes Swamp.

The Francis Beidler Forest, located in the Four Holes Swamp near Harleyville, SC is the second largest wildlife sanctuary operated by Audubon. Established in 1969 through the purchase of 3,415 acres and opened to the public in 1977, Beidler Forest has grown to almost 18,000 acres through purchase, gifts and mitigation-funded acquisition. The gem of the Sanctuary is 1,700 acres of old growth cypres

s/tupelo forest. With many trees over 1,000 years old, it has the distinction of being the oldest old-growth stand of cypress-tupelo in the United States and the largest remaining virgin stand of cypress tupelo forest in the world. In November of 1997, Francis Beidler Forest was selected as one of the first 15 Charter Audubon Centers. It is also part of the National Trail System, is listed by the Department of the Interior as a National Natural Landmark, and has been nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Sites. On May 30, 2008, the Francis Beidler Forest was added to the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance. Adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands provides a framework for international cooperation for conservation of globally significant wetlands. The Francis Beidler Forest Sanctuary is the 23rd site in the USA, the first ever in South Carolina and the only privately owned and managed Ramsar Site in the world. This outstanding recognition is helping reshape some of National Audubon’s priorities, elevating the status of our project state and region-wide and engaging new partners which only adds momentum to our ever strengthening program. For almost 40 years, Audubon South Carolina (ASC) staff has worked in the Four Holes watershed of the Edisto River Basin, leading the community, initiating broad-reaching education programs, and directing a successful habitat acquisition campaign. ASC has served as a national model for wetlands protection. Beidler is one of the largest wetland sanctuaries and provides some of the highest quality breeding habitats for birds on the East coast. It provides habitat for more than 140 bird species, providing breeding and nesting habitat for 52 species. Many of these birds need large patches of intact swamp forest, with the ideal configuration of at least 20,000 acres to thrive. Four Holes Swamp drains into the Edisto River, which is the largest fresh-water source to the ACE (Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto) Basin.

Want to go out into the woods but it's too hot during the day? Why don't you try walking out in the woods when it's less hot? We have a few spots left for our Night Exploration tomorrow, Saturday the 22nd, from 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM. You'll join one of our naturalists on a trip around the boardwalk under the full moon- With no lights! Well unless you count the moon, of course. Together we'll look and listen (but not taste) for nocturnal critters who thrive once the sun has set.

Photo by Richard Covey (this is a 10 minute exposure from August 12th, 2026 at 11:00 PM, in pursuit of the Perseid meteor shower. Most of that action was happening on the horizon at this latitude, and the only shooting star I saw was huge, but didn't pass by when the shutter was open. Sigh. Got some fireflies, though!)

Check out these actually glowing mushrooms found in our forest last week! These glow faintly all on their own (the dark photos are 10 minute long exposures) and to the human eye are about as bright as moonlight on the ground. As of this post we do not know what species they are, but we're working on it!

We're having a Family Light-Night Tour this evening starting at 8:15 PM. This program is led by one of our naturalists, and all guests are given black lights as we go through the forest and swamp in search of things that glow in the dark, from fungus to invertebrates and... Opossums? (If we're super lucky!)

See the forest in a new light!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Beidler Plant Swap today! Also a special shoutout to Zach Steinhauser who brought over a hundred plants from Wingards Market as a donation!

We have decided to extend the plant swap for the rest of today and the entirety of tomorrow, so if you couldn't come today the plants will still be out and available for swapping Saturday! Bring a plant to swap and you'll also get free admission to the boardwalk.

With all those storms that came through in the last few weeks a section of dead, fallen Water Tupelo was found floating down one of our lakes, covered in Green Fly Orchid that was fated to drown... Until staff discovered it, that is. Over a dozen orchids were recovered and are going to be added to the inventory of our Plant Swap event that's next week, Friday July 24th!

Green Fly Orchid (Epidendrum conopseum) is the only epiphytic (means it grows on other plants without harming the host) orchid that we have! These ones have been tied to coconut fiber and are ready for adoption, so if it's always been your dream to have an ethically harvested native tree orchid pet produced by an ancient forest with 1000+ year old trees, this may be your first, but hopefully not your last, chance. However... to participate in the Plant Swap next week you have to both register, and actually bring plants to swap.

Friends, we need to have a heart to heart talk. Do you have too many plants? Do your friends, family, and neighbors shy away from you after dozens of attempts to foist yet another plant on them? Are you running out of both room and pet names for your exponentially increasing population of Rattlesnake Master, Turkey Tangle Frogfruit, or Ornithogalum adseptentrionesvergentulum?

Well on Friday, July 24th, Beidler Forest is hosting our first ever Plant Swap starting at 10AM! Bring (some of) your surplus and see what plants others bring to trade! Anyone who brings a plant to trade will also get free admission to the boardwalk. We’re going to have some native plants up for trade as well, including some 3 month old native-grown Bald Cypress saplings grown from the cones of our beloved, ancient Meeting Tree!

This event is free, but registration is required.

We still have a few spots available for our Nature Journaling program with guest artist Lindsay Strout on Tuesday the 14th! Spend some time with us learning how to train your eye to notice the little details in life that most people overlook and pick up a new hobby that can be as calming as it is educational. No artistic or nature experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided with admission.

On Tuesday, July 14th, we're hosting a Nature Journaling workshop at Beidler from 10 AM to 12 PM. Visiting artist Lindsay Strout will be on site to show guests the basics and get you started on keeping visual records of your own adventures in nature. With this course you'll learn how to appreciate the finer details in life, whether it be leaves, snails, acorns, moss, small shiny things, feathers, doesn't matter! Both learning how to look closely for detail and trying to draw details you see can alter your perception and understanding of the world around you.

Preregistration is required, no skill or experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Children are permitted to attend, but we recommend that children participants be at least 12 years old.
