The City of Harper is seeking a law-enforcement professional who values integrity, community relationships and the important role public safety plays in small-town life.

Depending on the selected candidate’s experience, qualifications and leadership abilities, the position may be filled at the rank of Police Sergeant.

�� Wage range: $20.22–$32.31 per hour, depending on qualifications and appointment. Harper does have a residency requirement within 6-months of employment.

Applicants must have a high school diploma/GED and meet the certification and physical requirements of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Sergeant candidates must have at least five years of law-enforcement experience.

The City of Harper would like to announce that Sergeant Jacob Walter has been selected to fill the position of Chief of Police of Harper that will be vacated in December of 2026 when Chief Burns takes retirement.
While we will be sad to see Chief Burns retire, we are very excited for Sgt Walter!
Walter began his career at the City of Harper as a Reserve Officer in 2017. He then became a Patrolman in 2018 and was promoted to Sergeant in October of 2024.
According to Walter, "What makes this opportunity especially meaningful to me, is the ability to continue serving the community and department that have played such an important role in my life and my family's life. I believe effective law enforcement in a small community requires visibility, trust, accountability, and a willingness to lead by example."
These are the values he has worked to demonstrate throughout his career with the Harper Police Department.

BEWARE!

If anyone comes to your door in an attempt to sell products or services, that company must possess a permit through the City of Harper. This permit requires companies to provide documentation to ensure our community members are protected from scams and other schemes.

If you see people attempting to sell products or services, please call the City of Harper so we can confirm they have been checked and issued a permit. Recently it has become a common trend of peddlers and solicitors to attempt to operate without an approved permit. Help keep your community safe.

SCAM ALERT!

We have received reports of community members receiving emails stating that they have not paid a ticket and will face jail time if they do not pay.

This isn't real. You will receive a letter on official letterhead from the city of Harper or another municipality regarding missed court dates or unpaid tickets. Do not be fooled. No municipality will ever require you to pay with a gift card or cryptocurrency.

If you are able to identify the make and model, we would like to return this item to the owner.
