This week members of our Rescue Truck committee visited the 4guys factory in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania to inspect the chassis of our new heavy rescue. Captain Schmitt and Past Chief Schreiber inspected the truck prior to the box being built on the back. This new unit will replace our current aging 2000 E-One Rescue. The next meeting with 4guys will be in early 2024, prior to the truck being painted. A delivery date is expected by mid 2024.

On Monday night firefighters had the opportunity to train with our brothers and sisters from Main-Transit Fire Department. Crews from both companies practiced extrication skills using battery operated and hydraulic extrication tools. Firefighters also practiced vehicle stabilization using Paratech struts and airbags. Training with our mutual aid partners is vital in what we do! The familiarization with other departments equipment and personnel helps us work better together on the fire ground.

It is with the utmost sadness that we inform you of the passing of current Harris Hill President and past Chief Dave Parezo. As many of you know, Dave was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, as well as friend to many. Dave provided over 49 years of active service to the residents of Harris Hill. He passed away doing what he loved, traveling with the love of his life, Louise.

At this time the family is requesting privacy as they work through this difficult time. Further information on arrangements will follow when available.

This past Friday and Saturday, Harris Hill hosted a two day school bus rescue class. With having 4 elementary schools in our district and multiple schools in our surrounding mutual aid districts, this training was invaluable for our firefighters to learn. The two day training consisted of practicing techniques to safely access and remove patients who may be trapped/ injured in both the bus, as well as passenger vehicles. Harris Hill was joined by firefighters from Main-Transit Fire Department and Bowmansville Volunteer Fire Association. Thank you to NYS Office of Fire Prevention & Control (OFPC) for allowing us to host this class and Fire & Rescue Products of Harrisburg, LLC for providing us additional tools!

Some of our Junior Firefighters participated in the firefighting series hosted by Erie County on Saturday. Our Juniors learned valuable skills including hose line advancement, wall breeches, navigating through wire entanglement and even some EMS! Our Juniors are only 14-18 years old, dedicating their weekend time in addition to attending school, working part time jobs and participating in extracurricular activities, all to support the Harris Hill Community! If you’re interested in what we do, come see us on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7pm or visit us at www.hhvfc.com to fill out an application today.

Firefighters spent Monday night practicing ventilation techniques with the Erie County ventilation simulator. Ventilating a roof at a fire is an important task as it helps heat, gas, and smoke escape from the structure. When roof ventilation is coordinated with the interior crew extinguishing the fire, this task can help improve heat and visibility conditions inside the house. Thank you to the Erie County instructors for coming out and helping us remain efficient in our skills!

Our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters from Clarence Fire Company as they are mourning the loss of 50+ year member Bill Smith.

It is with a heavy heart the Clarence Fire Company shares the passing of our oldest member, Bill Smith, early this morning. Bill was almost 101 years old and a long-time member of our company, serving as President and Fire Police Captain for many years. Bill was also a WWII Veteran, serving with the 101st Airborne. Thank you for your many years of serving our country and community.
RIP Bill

This evening firefighters spent time drilling at an acquired structure located on Thompson Road. Tonight’s drill was considered a “step off” drill, where firefighters practiced skills as if we were dispatched to a working house fire. Skills that were refreshed included: hydrant hook up, hose line advancement and ventilation. While the skills may be considered “basic”, they’re very important to our operation and need to be practiced regularly to ensure our operations run smoothly when needed!

Last night firefighters had the first of several opportunities to practice utilizing our new battery powered Amkus Ion cutters and spreaders. The tools are a current upgrade from our aging hydraulic tool set on our current heavy rescue. Thank you to Pesci's Pizza & Wings for donating pizza and boneless wings to help feed our hungry firefighters before the drill began!

This morning Junior Firefighter Arcangelo Capozzolo was awarded the Presidents Award for the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen. The award was presented to Archangelo for his heroic actions at a house fire on his street last year. Archangelo spotted the fire at his neighbors house after getting home from school. He immediately ran over to the house and grabbed a garden hose to begin extinguishing the fire. Because of his heroic actions, damage to the structure was kept to a minimum and the residents were able to return home that evening.

07/26/2023

This morning Harris Hill Firefighters responded mutual aid with Main-Transit Fire Department to the Olive Garden on Transit Rd. The fire is believed to be caused by lithium ion batteries.

Did you know, lithium ion batteries are used to power many kinds of smart phones, laptops, e-bikes etc. When used incorrectly or damaged, these batteries can catch on fire or explode.

Some tips to keep you safe according to NFPA, include the following:

-Not charging the device on a pillow, couch, or bed.
-Do not keep charging the device or battery once it is fully charged.
-Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire
-Only use the battery that is designed for the device

Firefighters are out at the Clarence Town Park utilizing the town pond to practice drafting techniques. Drafting is often used when hydrants are not readily available to firefighters. Although our district has several hydrants, we may encounter a situation where drafting might be needed in our surrounding mutual aid districts. It was a great turnout from our firefighters on a beautiful summer night!
