Today, members of Harris Fire were invited by North Branch Fire Department to participate in an acquired structure burn.

These opportunities are priceless as they allow firefighters to train in realistic fire conditions that can’t be replicated in a classroom. Throughout the day, crews rotated through multiple evolutions, gaining critical sets and reps while sharpening the skills like hose advancement & hose management, water mapping & fire behavior and fire dynamics.

Every burn, every evolution, and every lesson learned helps prepare our firefighters to better serve and protect our community when the real call comes.

A huge thank you to North Branch Fire Department for the invitation, the hospitality, and the commitment to regional training partnerships. Working together makes all of our departments stronger.

Nothing beats training in real-world conditions.🔥

Most people don’t see the moments before the sirens.

The middle of dinner.
A kid’s baseball game.
Homework at the kitchen table.
A shower after a long workday.
Trying to finally sit down after a shift somewhere else.
… the Wilds game… 😜

Then the pager goes off. 🚨

And suddenly, farmers, mechanics, moms, dads, and business owners all drop what they’re doing and respond to their local fire department.

Today, multiple agencies came together for a grass fire that spread into the tree line — 3 fire departments, ambulance crews, police officers, deputies, DNR, and dispatchers all working side by side for over 6 hours to protect our community.

That’s the heart of the paid on-call firefighter.

We don’t do this for paychecks or recognition. We do it because when our community needs help, we show up. Even when we’re tired. Even when life is busy. Even when equipment breaks, communication gets messy or mistakes happen.

As a Chief, we look at our crews with a lot of pride. Not because we’re perfect — we’re not. But because no matter what challenges come our way, we work together, adapt, fix problems, and keep going. Because protecting our community matters.

And long after the smoke clears, the work continues — cleaning hose, repairing equipment, refilling trucks, restocking gear and getting ready for the next call.

So tonight, if you see a rural firefighter, thank them. Appreciate your volunteer and paid on-call departments. Communities like ours continue to be protected because ordinary people choose to answer the call. 🚒

April was one of the busiest months on record for Harris Fire Rescue, with 18 calls for service totaling more than 16 hours of response time. When accounting for personnel involved, our members dedicated over 56 hours serving the Harris community through emergency response.

A special thank you to firefighter Jim Hohn for compiling this month’s service summary and helping highlight the work being done behind the scenes each month! See our comments for more details!

🔥 Tonight our firefighters trained on window bailouts, a critical firefighter survival skill used when conditions quickly deteriorate and crews need to exit a structure quickly from a window. These evolutions build confidence, muscle memory, communication and trust under pressure.

A HUGE shoutout goes to Northland Custom Iron Works for donating the time, talent and materials to build the I-beam safety structure used for this training. Their support has been incredible, and this project gave our firefighters the opportunity to train in a realistic and safe environment. Thank you for always being so good to us!!

Training never stops. Proud of our crew for putting in the work. 💪🔥

This week, we hosted a Cub Scout Crossover Ceremony at Harris Fire! 🇺🇸🔥

This special event marks a big milestone—where scouts advance to the next rank and continue their journey of growth, leadership, and service.

We’re honored to be part of these moments and celebrate the next generation of leaders in our community. Congratulations to all the scouts on this well-earned achievement!

Harris Captain Nadeau had the opportunity to meet with Senator Mark Koran today for an important conversation about issues impacting Minnesota’s fire service and the communities we serve. Topics included building and fire codes, funding for Minnesota fire departments, cancer Line of Duty Death benefits, bill language moving forward, EMS services and PERA pensions.

It was great to have many different fire agencies represented in the room, with members from across the fire service and multiple ranks at the table. Strong collaboration and open dialogue like this help move our profession forward and ensure firefighters and EMS providers have the support they need.

Thank you to Senator Koran for taking the time to listen and engage on these critical issues. 🔥

It’s firefighter Friday and we are back with our newest hire, CJ! 🎉

Originally from Saint Paul, CJ and his family made the move to Harris in 2019. CJ is a proud husband to his wife, Casey, who has been a huge supporter of his journey in the fire service and a dad to three daughters who keep him busy outside of the station.

When he’s not at training you’ll find him coaching hockey and softball, or enjoying the outdoors fishing and hunting.

CJ joined Harris Fire Rescue with one goal in mind—to serve the community that became home for his family. And that’s exactly what he is learning to do.

His favorite quote- 💬 “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” – Tim Notke

We’re proud to have CJ on our team. If you see him around town or at the rink, make sure to say hi! 👋

Last night’s training started in the classroom with a face-to-face introduction from a local business, followed by a pre-plan review for another local occupancy.

As we transitioned to the next topic, training was interrupted by a call for service. After returning, we moved into hands-on scenarios involving medical emergencies and patient movement using our Polaris Ranger and Stokes basket.

Training topics included traumatic injuries, long bone fractures requiring splinting, and heatstroke recognition/treatment. Members also practiced patient packaging, transport, and coordinated task assignments down to the division/group level in line with NIMS/ICS principles.

We wrapped up with location-based response training using GPS grid coordinates from cell phone pings and the What3Words app for rapid landmark identification.

Strong night of training, adaptability, and teamwork. Thanks to everyone who participated and to our local partners for their support. 🚒🚑

📞 National 911 Telecommunicators Week

Behind every call for help is a calm voice, a steady presence, and a professional guiding the way. Our dispatchers are the unseen first responders—working around the clock to keep our crews and our community safe.

From the first ring to the final clear, they are the lifeline.

🚨 Harris Fire Department proudly thanks our Chisago County dispatchers for their dedication, compassion, and commitment to service. We couldn’t do this job without you.
