Office of the Governor of Pennsylvania is making good on the promise to empower small businesses and expand economic opportunity in PA. It was an honor to join my colleagues Rep. David Madsen and PA State Rep. Tom Mehaffie as well as other dignitaries at this morning’s Labor Day celebration, hosted by the Central PA Labor Council. In the PA House we’ve passed bills to increase the minimum wage, ensure OSHA protections for public sector employees, enshrine the right to organize in the PA constitution, provide safe staffing in hospitals and more. We need to do more including passing a cost-of-living adjustment to retired state employees/education staff. Wishing everyone a happy Labor Day!

I am very happy that $76,392 in state funding has been awarded two area schools to provide fruits and vegetables to students under the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. We know that teaching our kids healthy eating habits from an early age is critical to maintaining a healthy relationship with food for a lifetime. Our schools are one of the best places for them to learn how to eat healthily. Thanks to this federal funding, our schools can help us teach our kids to make smart, healthy choices at snack time by making tasty fresh fruits and vegetables available to them.

I am very pleased that $384,928 in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Green Light-Go program funds have been awarded to Lower Paxton Township to update signal equipment at Colonial Road (SR 3017), Colonial Park Mall Driveway/Colonial Road (SR 3017) and Crums Mill Road/Devonshire Road in the 105th District.

Thanks to these grants from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)’s Green Light-Go program, our communities will be able to update signal equipment at key intersections to reduce congestion and increase traffic flow, ensuring that motorists travel quickly, efficiently and safely through our streets. These traffic signal updates will also help ensure pedestrians are safer as well. This funding is an example of how government is working to improve services and the quality of life for our residents.

Happy 233rd birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard! Between defending critical U.S. ports and waterways, serving as first responders, and enforcing maritime law, the U.S. Coast Guard really does it all. A tireless force always working for the good of the nation and the upholding of the U.S. Constitution, we hope all those who serve in the USCG feel appreciated on this day of acknowledgement and celebration.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to join the PA House Democratic Policy Committee and tour Wyomissing Area & Reading High Schools to understand the disparities students experience in school district mere minutes away from one another. The state has a Constitutional mandate to provide a “thorough and efficient” public education. We have the resources to close educational gaps regardless of where a student lives. My colleagues and I are excited to get to work!
