πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Celebrating The End of WWII πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

President Harry S. Truman announced the unconditional surrender of Japan at 7 p.m. on Aug. 14, 1945, addressing reporters gathered at the White House. The news sent millions of American and Allied troops and civilians out into streets around the world to celebrate, though the Japanese didn’t formally sign surrender documents ending World War II until Sept. 2. Americans celebrate victory over Japan, or V-J Day, on this date; in Great Britain, V-J Day is Aug. 15, which was when the announcement arrived in the United Kingdom.

"I have solemnly sworn that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

I'm not even sure what to say, other than yes. All of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coasties, and Space Explorers count.
Their death, for your freedom, was memorialized by this monument.

National Commander of The American Legion James W. β€œBill” Oxford issued the following statement today:
β€œThe desecration of national war memorials, which honor veterans of all races, is an absolute disgrace. The heroes honored by these monuments fought for social justice and freedom for all. Moreover America’s veterans, who witnessed horrific violence in theaters around the world, should not have to see the same death and destruction here at home. The American Legion has always believed in equality for all. We also believe in the decency of the vast majority of law enforcement officers. Those who break the law, whether they are police officers or violent protesters, should be arrested and prosecuted. America, you can do better than this.”

You're never alone.
Just pick up the phone.

I got a message a while ago that weighed on my mind (person will be kept anonymous but comic was posted with their permission). As a lot of you who follow this page know, I have a list of USCG suicides that I started in 2017 to bring awareness to the tragic issue in our branch. A shipmate contacted me saying how the mere existence of the list is what stopped their attempt. I have no shame admitting I cried over this. I’m so grateful that my art and message has had an impact. Hearing such things means so much to me, and gives me faith that my efforts aren’t in vain.
Times have been rougher than usual lately, and those in a dark place are now experiencing those depressing thoughts tenfold. I have a bad feeling that we will see a rise in suicides during this time of social distancing and isolation.
Please, you’re NOT alone.
The National Suicide Hotline is 1-800-273-8255, but if you’re not comfortable talking text HOME to the Crisis Text Line at 741741.

β€œFor God and Country, We associate ourselves together for the following purposes:
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.”

General information

In contrast to other veterans organizations, the Legion offers a number of local programs and activities to strengthen its commitment to our nation’s grass roots and the people we serve. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs; it continues to educate youths on the importance of sportsmanship and develops the quality of our country’s citizenship. The Heroes to Hometowns program is the only nationwide reintegration assistance service for wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, millions of dollars in donations have been given to fellow veterans and their families in times of grief, and various scholarship opportunities ensure the future success of our youth. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvements in the legislation process. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to their community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands not behind politics, but the issues and people that institute progress by focusing on veterans rights and quality of life. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.
