Maj Nichole “Vapor” Ayers is one of 10 candidates selected by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to be a part of the astronaut class of 2021.

During her time as a member of the 1st Fighter Wing, Maj Ayers flew more than 1,100 hours as a pilot in both T-38 and the F-22 aircraft. Although many people dream of becoming a fighter pilot, the sky was just the starting point for her.

Ayers will report for duty at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas in January 2022.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY | “The Air Force Hour” debuted on the Armed Forces Radio Network on January 18, 1948. This radio show featured The United States Air Force Band and was hosted by Lieutenant Cass Bielski. During the Golden Age of Radio, “The Air Force Hour” was carried by an astounding 308 network stations, as well as globally through the Armed Forces Radio Network. “The Air Force Hour” eventually transitioned into “Serenade in Blue” and then “Serenade in Stereo,” which lasted into the 1970s. Combined, these radio series were the longest running and most successful military radio program in history.

During the height of American radio programming, The United States Air Force Band broadcasted concerts such as the one shown above. Here, Major George Howard appears on the podium during a brief break in a broadcast concert in Chicago, IL on August 19, 1946. This concert was broadcast on Chicago’s WGN & nationally on the Mutual Broadcasting System for the show “This Is Your Country,” a program that ran for 18 weeks in 1946.

The , led by Col Greg Buchanan, was responsible for transporting 100 laptops to underprivileged kids in the Bahamas.

After Hurricane Dorian, many schools were damaged and left without proper resources. That’s why our pilots made it a priority to ensure that students were able to continue their studies. Being a pilot means making an impact in the air and on the ground!
