Biden's student debt relief plan is temporarily blocked. Here's what you need to know.

The Friday evening ruling comes less than a week since the application portal went live. Already, nearly 22 million people — more than half of qualifying borrowers — have signed up. The administration could have begun processing applications and changing loan balances beginning Sunday.

"The order does not reverse the trial court's dismissal of the case, or suggest that the case has merit," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Friday evening. "It merely prevents debt from being discharged until the court makes a decision."

Nearly 22 million people — more than half of qualifying borrowers — have signed up. The Biden administration says it is continuing to accept and review applications during the temporary hold.

Pa. election 2022: How to serve as a poll worker on Nov. 8 | Spotlight PA

HARRISBURG — When Pennsylvania holds its 2022 general election in November, thousands of poll workers will ensure that voting runs smoothly. You could be one of them.

Counties are currently recruiting people to work at the state’s more than 9,000 voting locations. For many years, the Pennsylvania Department of State has voiced concerns over the lack of poll workers, a problem that was exacerbated by the pandemic.

With the 2022 Pennsylvania election less than two months away, the state is recruiting people to set up polling places, assist voters, and more on Election Day.

Looming election jolts Harrisburg into action as Pa. lawmakers pass a flurry of bills, cash in on fundraisers | Spotlight PA

“Among other priorities, the GOP-led legislature voted on bills to mandate a moment of silence in schools every Sept. 11, improve data-sharing about overdoses, and increase public access to financial records from Penn State, Pitt, and other state-related universities.”

The GOP-led legislature moved five bills authored by the party’s gubernatorial candidate, state Sen. Doug Mastriano, forcing Democrats to choose between policies they might support and bolstering the record of their political opponent.

If viewers were expecting fireworks, the discussion – it wasn’t really much of a debate – between Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and his Democratic opponent, Harrisburg City Councilwoman Shamaine Daniels, on WHTM-27 Wednesday afternoon was a dud.

In what may be their only debate, U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and his Democratic opponent, Shamaine Daniels, traded barbs, but didn't stray from the script.

Op-Ed: It's time to fix Harrisburg — let's start with the ground rules

“The Pennsylvania legislature is a case in point. It has one of the most expensive and least effective legislatures in the country. In fact, on average, less than 7% of bills introduced in Harrisburg pass in both chambers, and some laws simply rename roads and bridges. Meanwhile, many pieces of bipartisan legislation languish in committee and are never even debated.”

Pennsylvania has one of the nation's most expensive and least effective legislatures. Fix Harrisburg has a plan that starts with changing the rules.

“So I’m just going to continue to fight for the people of south-central Pennsylvania dealing with crushing inflation and cost of living, dealing with incredible crime rates, dealing with an open southern border and supply chain issues,” he said.”

Facing reporters Tuesday in Dauphin County, he also declined to endorse Pennsylvania's 2020 election results.

Less than a week after its introduction and a month before the primary election, the Republican-controlled state Senate has pushed through legislation eliminating ballot drop boxes.

The upper chamber voted 29-20 along party lines on Wednesday to approve the GOP-authored bill requiring voters who don’t return mail-in ballots through the U.S. Postal Service to deliver them to their county elections office instead of depositing them into a drop box. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives. Staff Reporter Marley Parish has the details. Link in bio. .

Patty Kim and challenger Heather MacDonald, a candidate from the West Shore portion of the new district.
