All three juveniles in the Prison completed the “Success for Teens” program in late August, and we are so proud! We are endeavoring to put a stop to the revolving door and give youthful offenders a chance to thrive outside. The founder of the program even came to the graduation, and our Treatment Department deserves kudos for their leadership of this program as well. 👏🏻👏🏻 Congratulations to all who are part of this ”Steered Straight” program. This morning, Dauphin County and its outside electrical contractor, G.R. Sponaugle, will begin repairs on the damaged power line that caused the prison to lose power last Friday morning. The repair requires the prison to be disconnected from the generator that is currently providing full power throughout the facility. As a result, the facility will run on emergency generator power.

This process is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. today, with the scheduled outage expected to last three to four hours as connection is reestablished.

Prison staff are preparing for this scheduled outage by planning meals, medical treatment and other needs. County maintenance staff will also be on hand to provide additional maintenance support.

During the duration of the outage, the facility will be on lockdown.

Dauphin County remains committed to the permanent restoration of full power to the prison and to the continued safety of all inmates and staff.

Dauphin County Officials Confirm the Full Restoration of Power to the Prison

Harrisburg, PA (August 3, 2024, 12:45 pm)---- Dauphin County officials have confirmed that all electrical and air conditioning systems are running at full capacity at the Prison after digging by an outside contractor on an unrelated project late Friday morning led to a power outage and high temperatures inside the Prison yesterday.

Prison leaders said that a generator capable of providing full power to the county prison arrived late last evening. The generator was up and running at approximately 2 a.m., while county maintenance staff and the county's contractor, G.R. Sponaugle, continued efforts to restore full power to the prison.

Air conditioning on all blocks was restored as of early this morning. Temperatures are currently reading in the 70s.

Power has also been restored to the prison's kitchen, as of approximately 11:30 am.

G.R. Sponaugle and county maintenance staff worked diligently to restore full power and remained on site until the full restoration was accomplished and confirmed.

Damage to the power line, caused inadvertently by the outside contractor, is still being assessed.

Dauphin County Prison Works to Restore Power Throughout the Facility after Local Power Outage

6 pm update – Dauphin County Facilities Maintenance staff reported that an incident occurred late this morning when a subcontractor, who is not employed by Dauphin County and was working on an unrelated project, inadvertently damaged a powerline while digging near the Dauphin County Prison, 501 Mall Road, in Swatara Twp.

The resulting power outage impacted multiple county buildings, including the Prison.

Dauphin County contractor, G.R. Sponaugle, is currently on site addressing the issue. They have assessed the functionality of the Prison’s emergency generators and are providing a generator to meet the facility’s full electrical needs.

The Warden confirmed that temperatures in the Spring Creek section of the prison have stabilized. However, temperatures in other parts of the prison vary, with some areas experiencing temperatures exceeding 85 degrees. We are urgently working to restore power to our AC units.

Medical staff at the prison are actively responding to any needs as they arise to ensure the well-being of all inmates and staff.

Due to these issues, visitation has been suspended for today.

Additionally, a suspicious odor prompted staff to call UGI for an assessment. A gas leak was ruled out by UGI.

Dauphin County is working diligently to restore full power to the Prison as quickly and safely as possible. We anticipate being fully powered by generator later this evening.

DCP’s own Grinch stopped by the toy store serving Children & Youth Services families to ensure the goodies donated by prison staff were on display. The Grinch befriended therapy dog Coco while there, but don’t tell Max, lest he get jealous …
