Dauphin County Prison Works to Restore Power Throughout the Facility after Local Power Outage
6 pm update – Dauphin County Facilities Maintenance staff reported that an incident occurred late this morning when a subcontractor, who is not employed by Dauphin County and was working on an unrelated project, inadvertently damaged a powerline while digging near the Dauphin County Prison, 501 Mall Road, in Swatara Twp.
The resulting power outage impacted multiple county buildings, including the Prison.
Dauphin County contractor, G.R. Sponaugle, is currently on site addressing the issue. They have assessed the functionality of the Prison’s emergency generators and are providing a generator to meet the facility’s full electrical needs.
The Warden confirmed that temperatures in the Spring Creek section of the prison have stabilized. However, temperatures in other parts of the prison vary, with some areas experiencing temperatures exceeding 85 degrees. We are urgently working to restore power to our AC units.
Medical staff at the prison are actively responding to any needs as they arise to ensure the well-being of all inmates and staff.
Due to these issues, visitation has been suspended for today.
Additionally, a suspicious odor prompted staff to call UGI for an assessment. A gas leak was ruled out by UGI.
Dauphin County is working diligently to restore full power to the Prison as quickly and safely as possible. We anticipate being fully powered by generator later this evening.
