Station owners, lawmakers continue pressure on carmakers to support AM radio

The matter of automakers removing AM radios from electric vehicles continues to garner national attention following Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) asking the heads of 20 major car brands to detail their plans for AM radio in their vehicles.

Lawmakers and broadcast station operators continue to mount pressure on manufacturers of electric vehicles who are deliberately leaving out AM radio tuners in their new, all-electric cars. Station owners say the fix to the issue isn't complicated.

Pittsburgh native, ‘Eyewitness News’ creator Al Primo dies

Many of the conventions of TV news today — on local newscasts or cable news or the “Today” show — originated in the mind of Pittsburgh native Al Primo, a University of Pittsburgh graduate who worked at Pittsburgh’s WDTV, which was re-christened KDKA-TV during his tenure as a news writer, reporter, anchor and eventually assistant news director at the station.

It was after Primo’s stint at KDKA that he created the “Eyewitness News” format at KYW-TV in Philadelphia.

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel has circulated a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to her colleagues that, if adopted, would put more pressure on companies to keep their EAS equipment up to date.

EEO Rules & Regulations Webinar with David Oxenford
September 20, 2022 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Must Pre-register - PAB Membership Required

Join us on September 20 when David Oxenford of the Washington DC law firm Wilkinson Barker Knauer will review all of the FCC’s obligations and discuss how you can meet those obligations and stay out of trouble with the FCC. The FCC has continued to enforce its EEO rules even while considering changes to its policies. A station’s compliance is reviewed both in connection with its license renewal and through periodic random audits. Stations still need to engage in wide dissemination of information about job openings and engage in specified outreach activities designed to educate their communities about broadcast employment and to train employees for advancement in their broadcast careers, even if they have no job openings.

Emergency Alert System Vulnerability

PAB ALERT

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released a public notice, available at the link below, which states that it recently became aware of certain vulnerabilities in EAS encoder/decoder devices which, if not updated to most recent software versions, could allow an intruder to issue EAS alerts over the host infrastructure (TV, radio, cable network).

FEMA strongly encourages EAS participants to ensure that:
• EAS devices and supporting systems are up to date with the most recent software versions and security patches;
• EAS devices are protected by a firewall;
• EAS devices and supporting systems are monitored and audit logs are regularly reviewed looking for unauthorized access.

Senators Look To Blunt Support For Performance Royalty Legislation.

A bill that would mandate performance royalties on broadcast radio stations for music airplay is expected to be introduced in the Senate soon.

Aiming to blunt support for a Senate version of the American Music Fairness Act, Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and John Barrasso (R-WY) are urging their colleagues in the Senate to cosponsor the Local Radio Freedom Act, the NAB-backed resolution that opposes any new radio performance royalty.

Doing so, they say, would enable their colleagues to show their “support for the important local news, reporting and public safety functions that free, local radio stations in your state provide to your constituents.”

Shadowing, Internships and Co-op with Point Park University

In the School of Communication and the Rowland School of Business students are prepared for real life business experiences that connect the classroom to the workplace. Each of these sequentially intensive experiential learning opportunities are designed to give on the job training that will make each student competitive in today’s increasingly demanding job market.

Shadowing Program

For many first-year students shadowing is their first experience “on the job” with their chosen major. It is integrated with the SAEM 101 intro course in Sports, Arts and Entertainment Management (SAEM) which includes introductory business knowledge and skills and emphasis on how to appropriately navigate a business environment. Hosts often use shadowing as a pre-interview for internships.

Shadowing In-Person – Students schedule 20 hours of time shadowing. Characterized by an initial orientation, students then can actively participate and/or passively watch. The more engagement employers offer, the better the experience for both.

Shadowing Virtually – Students schedule four virtual meetings: (1) initial orientation (get to know you), (2) to get employers feedback on their industry research, (3) to get employers feedback on their company research and (4) to offer employers personal professional perspective/advice/advice.

Email shadowing coordinator Olivia Stawovy – [email protected]

Internship Program

An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Students can learn how courses apply to the real world and build valuable experience through hands-on learning.

Internships cover a semester (12-15 week), 150 hours total with the student earning college credit. Can be full or part time, virtual/ in person or paid /unpaid depending on the employer and career field.

Email Dawnese Booker, program manager – [email protected]

Co-op Program

Cooperative Education or Co-op program is the ultimate embedded experience is a paid and almost fulltime program where students work approximately 32+ hours per week for (12-15 weeks) for a minimum of 384 hours total. Co-op programs are taken for credit and include academic requirements.

Pennsylvania radio lost an amazing person today; Chuck Carver (pictured with sons Jeffrey and Kevin in 2019) died this morning in Lancaster County. He was the longtime owner and General Manager of WATS/WAVR in Sayre. He recently retired and moved to Lititz, PA to be closer to his sons and grandchildren. Chuck was kind beyond words and was devoted to his family and community. The PAB extends the deepest sympathy to his family. Gone too soon.
