Bill Information - House Bill 2454; Regular Session 2019-2020

Today, the Southeast Delegation met with PP Pennsylvania Advocates to discuss how sexual and reproductive health has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Did you know that 1 in 3 women struggled to get birth control or reproductive care due to Coronavirus?

Rep. Christina Sappey has introduced HB 2454, which would provide for telemedicine in PA. This bill would create additional access to care that would help not only women, but all who face barriers to treatment during a time when we need more options. You can read Rep. Sappey's legislation by visiting the link below.

The 2020 Census deadline has been extended until October 31st. Communities lose $2,000 for every person not counted. That means less money for schools, hospitals and infrastructure in a time when we need it most. Make sure you get counted!

Rep. Joe Ciresi

October 4th-10th is National Fire Prevention Week. Southeast Delegation Member Rep. Joe Ciresi participated by sharing information on how you can protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Check out Rep. Ciresi's video below with the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner to learn about these life-saving techniques.

I recently told you about the CO detector going off in my house and how firefighters found a gas leak. Now, I want to help protect you and your family from this type of situation. As part of Fire Prevention Week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner to talk about the signs of CO poisoning and the steps to prevent it from happening to you.

My office is also accepting donations of new carbon monoxide detectors which will be distributed to local fire companies. Donations can be dropped off in the box at the back door of my Royersford District Office, located off of Oak St.

Yesterday, Governor Wolf signed an order to reopen the Mortgage & Rental Assistance program and extended the application to November 4th.

For more information on this crucial program, check out Southeast Delegation Member Rep. Danielle Friel Otten's post below.

Governor Wolf has issued an emergency order extending the COVID-19 Relief Mortgage and Rental Assistance Grant Program. These CARES assistance programs for Pennsylvania renters and homeowners have now been reopened and will accept applications until Nov. 4. All eligibility requirements remain the same as they were when the programs ended on Sept. 30. Applications submitted prior to Oct. 1 will continue to be reviewed, and new applications will be added to the pool of submissions.

Applications for rent and mortgage relief are available through the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency’s website at www.PHFA.org. Look for the red CARES banner on the PHFA homepage.

While the extension of the Mortgage and Rental Assistance Grant Program will allow more individuals and families to apply for the assistance they need as a result of the pandemic, we must also continue to work toward more long-term solutions to help Pennsylvanians stay in their homes with the winter months just around the corner, and help ensure that homeowners and mom-and-pop landlords can meet their mortgage obligations.

That’s why I am proud to co-sponsor the Safe at Home package of bills, which go beyond the PHFA programs to provide assistance to more renters, homeowners, and small landlords across the commonwealth. Keeping families in their homes is good for Pennsylvanians and good for our state economy as we work to recover from the economic consequences of the pandemic.

Southeast Delegation Bucks County Vice Chair Rep. Perry Warren shares an update on Governor Tom Wolf's recent announcement to increase capacities for outdoor and indoor events. Check out Rep. Warren's post below for more information!

Last week, I, along with other Democratic representatives, met with Governor Tom Wolf to discuss the concerns of students, parents, educators and other members of our communities regarding the numbers of people who can safely attend school sports and other events. Since that meeting the Governor and his staff worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to design new guidelines that can increase the number of attendees at an event, based on a percentage of the maximum occupancy of the venue, while continuing to protect the health and safety of the participants and spectators. In the meantime, I spoke with several parents, teachers and school board members. Last night, we met again with the Governor’s staff and the deputy secretary of the Department of Health to discuss the Governor’s conclusions and updated recommendations. Today, Governor Wolf announced the new guidelines, which result from members of the legislature working WITH the Governor and the Department of Health and local school officials to devise a policy that will enable a greater number of participants and spectators to enjoy an event while protecting the health and safety of participants, attendees and the public.

Our teachers are facing the most challenging times of their careers. They are making sure kids get the information they need in a virtual setting or in a physical setting while also helping our children practice safe and healthy habits. They are not only teachers, but compassionate individuals who are working with parents to make sure these children are happy and well adjusted. They are addressing concerns and answering questions they never thought they would have to prepare for. Many teachers have gone out of their way-and on their own time-to make sure parents and children are understanding the material, making sure students have the supplies they need to do the work and providing meals to fuel their minds and bodies.

Today we celebrate World Teachers' Day even though teachers improve our children's lives every day! Check out SE Delegation Member and Caucus Chair Rep. Joanna McClinton's post below in recognition of all the hard work our teachers do!

In honor of #WorldTeachersDay, I want to say THANK YOU to all of our teachers for adapting to these unprecedented times and not letting a global pandemic stop their ongoing commitment to helping our children succeed.

Some of our Southeast Delegation Members took part in commemorating the bicentennial anniversary of the Grace United Methodist Church, which served as the interim Chambers for nearly two years during 1897-1898.

Below, Southeast Delegation Treasurer Rep. Steve Malagari captures some great pics with fellow Delegation Members: Vice Chair Rep. Jennifer O'Mara, Bucks County Regional Vice Chair Rep. Perry Warren and Rep. Joe Ciresi. Fellow Dems Rep. Ed Neilson, Rep. Bob Merski and Rep. Bob Freeman joined in as well as Republican colleagues PA State Rep. Jesse Topper and Rep. Megan Schroeder.

Today, My colleagues and I celebrated the bicentennial of Grace United Methodist Church here in town. From February 1897 through December 1898, this church was the interim Capitol for Pennsylvania after a fire burned down the previous Capitol Building. To celebrate this occasion, we opened up session in the church just like our predecessors did over 100 years ago.

This morning, I joined Gov. Tom Wolf and state Sen. Yesterday, Governor Tom Wolf announced that restaurants can increase indoor dining capacity to 50% beining on September 21st! For more informaiton, check out Rep. Wendy Ullman's post bellow!

I am pleased that Gov. Tom Wolf will allow restaurants to increase indoor occupancy to 50% starting Sept. 21. I’ve been encouraging the Administration to safely take this step to aid the restaurant industry in Pennsylvania. I am also glad that the Governor’s order will continue to require restaurants to implement social distancing, masking and other mitigation efforts to protect the health of staff and patrons. We must remain vigilant in the weeks and months to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Rep. Margo Davidson

Since the 1700's, voter suppression tactics have been used to disenfranchise marginalized groups --especially for women and people of color. Voter suppression efforts are still happening today. Watch Southeast Delegation Chairwoman Rep. Margo Davidson stand up for voting access during the debate of House Bill 2626.

Voter suppression efforts date back to the 1700s and continue today. I called those efforts out as BOGUS.

Rep. Jennifer O'Mara

By normalizing the conversation around suicide, and the thoughts of and attempts thereof, can we can help to prevent PA's 10th leading cause of death. Speak up. Lend an ear. Show compassion. Check out Rep. Jennifer O'Mara's post below regarding her resolution to mark September 2020 as National Suicide Awareness Month in PA.

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in Pennsylvania and the 10th leading cause nationwide. Suicide awareness is a very personal issue to me, which is why I introduced House Resolution 965, marking September as National Suicide Awareness Month and September 10th as World Suicide Prevention Day.
