Basic Winter Maintenance Can Save on Homeowners Insurance Claims and Premiums

Now is the time to take care of some basic home maintenance that can prevent property damage and help you avoid costly insurance claims over the winter months.

Tip 3: Be prepared for heavy snow accumulations and ice that can damage gutters and roofs.

Ice forming on your gutters can cause water to build up and seep into your home. To prevent ice dams by minimizing snow melt on your roof -
- Insulate your home properly.
- Make sure your attic is well-ventilated.
- Seal any gaps allowing warm air into the attic.

Today is the first day of winter and it's the perfect time to take care of some basic home maintenance that can prevent property damage and help you avoid costly insurance claims over the colder months.

Water damage from freezing pipes is the most significant source of home damage year after year.

To avoid freezing pipes:
- Insulate and/or apply pipe sleeves or heat tape to pipes located in unheated spaces like basements, crawl spaces, attics and garages.
- Keep the home warm at or above 65 degrees F
- Be sure to leave garage doors closed.

It’s also important to know what your homeowners insurance covers – for more information, visit https://www.insurance.pa.gov/Coverage/Pages/Homeowners.aspx.
