The last week of August traditionally brings the Washington County Farm Bureau (PA) and Greene County Farm Bureau’s Legislative Tour. These are wonderful opportunities for the leadership of each county to highlight important issues facing agriculture, not only in the 46th Senatorial District, but throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the U.S. What I am most thankful for is that this open dialogue is not always just about identifying a problem, but often includes options for solutions.

This year’s conversation revolved around the ever-changing landscape of small, family-owned farms and what it means for them to diversify their businesses, especially if they are looking to bring future generations into the family farm. We must continually focus on reducing government overreach and allowing these farms to remain the economic backbone that we all know they are. There were also updates from the Pennsylvania Game Commission- Southwest Region and its efforts to give farmers a better chance to manage deer herds. The Game Commission’s outreach to the Farm Bureau has been a hallmark of these meetings over the last few years.

I am most grateful for the leadership of both Farm Bureau organizations and especially thankful to the two farms that served as hosts.

In Washington County, Farm Bureau President Lisa Wherry and Legislative Chair Don Carter worked in cooperation with the Washington County Conservation District (WCCD) to host the tour at R&L Farms, located in the rolling hills of East Finley Township. Bobby and Kathy Logue-Ross have a beautiful 250-cow, 330-acre cow-calf operation and have worked very closely with the WCCD to create a wonderful family farm, with Kathy serving as the fourth generation.

In Greene County, Farm Bureau President Harley Gapen and Legislative Chair George Scull gave a great presentation at Crouse Farms, located in Morris Township. Lew and Debbie Crouse manage a beautiful 168-head, 227-acre sheep farm, where they raise lambs for show, meat and wool high up in the hills. This diversified operation speaks to the long and glorious history that sheep farming has in Greene County.

I am co-hosting this year's event with PA State Rep. Tim O'Neal, and the Washington County Commissioners Nick Sherman, Electra Janis, and Larry Maggi.

I would like to sincerely thank my two summer district interns, Nick Horgan and Allee Hoover! These two outstanding young people have done an incredible job representing my office with professionalism, diligence and a strong work ethic. We are certainly sad to see their internships come to an end, but we are so excited to see where their hard work and dedication take them next!

Nick is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in political science and history at Robert Morris University and is expected to graduate next year.

Allee is beginning her sophomore year at Penn State University–Main Campus, where she is studying agricultural and extension education with plans to minor in communications. If Allee looks familiar, that’s because she also served as the 2024 West Alexander Fair Queen!

Thank you both for everything you have done for our office and the people we serve! It has been a pleasure having you on the . Good luck, Nick and Allee!

I recently toured AHN Suburban in Bellevue with PA State Rep. Jason Ortitay, PA State Rep. Tim O'Neal, Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) Executive Director Dr. Don Martin, and IU1 Assistant to the Executive Director for Educational Programs Jenny Lent. Lena Hannah from IU1 invited us to see the facility.

Lena wanted us to see how this former hospital is currently being used and to think about whether it could inspire ideas for the future of Canonsburg Hospital after the new one is built. Lena presented this opportunity as an example, and wanted to show us a model that is already working. AHN Suburban is a hospital that is over 100 years old and has become a mix of a business incubator, a healthcare innovation center, and an educational resource. Instead of leaving empty spaces unused, the building is now put to good use.

AlphaLab Health is at the heart of this effort. It is a partnership between Innovation Works and Allegheny Health Network that helps life sciences startups by giving them access to clinicians, office space, labs, and support to grow. This program is overseen by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, Chief Physician Executive for Community Health and Innovation, and Matthew Bauer, Director of Operations.

Northgate School District Superintendent Dr. Caroline Johns helped the school become an early tenant and now uses the entire seventh floor. Students there can get internships, job experience, entrepreneurship training, and other learning opportunities. There is also a program, supported by philanthropy and Highmark, that helps students deal with social anxiety, which has increasingly become an issue among our young students. I would like to thank Dr. Chris Caton, Northgate's Director of Curriculum and Assessment, for helping show us around their space and discuss their programming.

On our tour, we also visited a commercial kitchen where Catapult Culinary trains chefs to cook and to run their own businesses. There is a fitness center that connects students with physical therapy and research. We saw a greenhouse, too, which grows about 200 heads of lettuce each week as part of a hands-on horticulture program.

This was certainly an exciting look at how a large, unused space that is fully equipped with modern technology can be saved from demolition. Whether or not this would be the right fit for the Canonsburg Hospital remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an option.
