Central PA GIS Day GIS Day 2021 will be celebrated virtually on Wednesday, November 17th. This is a FREE event to create awareness and share knowledge about GIS technologies.

Every year since 2009, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania along with other Partners host a free event during National Geography Week in November. The goal of this free event is to create awareness and knowledge about GIS technologies by showcasing how they contribute and enhance our everyday lives. There are always workshops , demonstrations, and exhibits geared to a variety of different audiences.

EXCITING NEWS: We are pleased to announce that our Keynote Speaker for GIS Day 2020, on November 18th is... Dr. Claire A. Jantz from Shippensburg University!!

Dr. Claire A. Jantz is a Professor in the Geography-Earth Science Department and Director of the Center for Land Use and Sustainability (CLUS) at Shippensburg University (SU). While earning her PhD in geography from the University of Maryland, she worked as a full-time research associate at the Woods Hole Research Center in Woods Hole, MA. In 2005 she joined the faculty at SU, and in 2015 became the director of the CLUS. Dr. Jantz has spent nearly 20 years engaged in the interdisciplinary field of land use science, where GIScience and technology are foundational tools, and is recognized as a leader in land use and ecosystem change modeling.

2020 Regional Workshops

The National Geospatial Technology Center of Excellence (GeoTech Center) is now accepting applications for the 2020 Regional Workshops which will be held at Harper College (IL) (June 17-19), Southwestern College (CA) (July 9-10), Jefferson Community & Technical College (KY) (August 4-6), Monroe Community College (NY) (August 11-12), and Northland Community & Technical College (MN) (October14-16). Each 2-3 day workshop includes top notch instruction, hands-on activities, and mentorship as you learn new content and develop curriculum that can be used in one of your classes. The Sixth Annual Water Data Workshop, which will be hosted jointly by PaMAGIC and the DCNR Bureau of Geological Survey entitled “Defining Data and Workflows for PA Hydro”.

There are three (3) workshops this year:
1.Susquehanna Basin – Tuesday, January 28, 2020; SRBC conference facility, Harrisburg
2. Delaware Basin – Thursday, January 30, 2020: ESRI Conference facility, Chesterbrook
3. Ohio Basin – Thursday, February 6, 2020; SPC conference facility, Pittsburgh

There is no charge for the workshop but RSVP is required, and PaMAGIC will provide a working lunch. Technical briefings will start promptly at 10 AM, so plan to arrive by 9:30 and meet your fellow participants. Do you know any students in middle or high school that love GIS and want to win some $$$? Well then there is a competition for them!

The PA Alliance for Geographic Education along with PaMAGIC, PASDA (Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access), and Esri are happy to announce the 2020 ArcGIS Online (AGO) map competition for middle school and high school students across the Commonwealth.
There is a limit of one entry per student (as an individual or as part of a team) and a limit of 10 entries per school. For this year’s competition, students should develop an AGO: Story Map; Presentation; or Web App which addresses this year’s theme: “Pennsylvania: Past, Present, and Future.”

On behalf of the Central PA GIS Day Committee we would like to congratulate Jason Burke for receiving Teacher of the Year award and to the Abington Heights AP Human Geography students, Isabel, Julia, Ashley, Angela, Lauren, Jordin, and Michael, who won in the PA Draw the Lines Contest. They created district maps for PA to combat gerrymandering. Esri also handed out 3 licenses for one year subscriptions too Esri products to local high schools. Thank you to Esri for being so generous and a special thank you to our keynote speaker, Professor Kristen Kurland and all the other presenter and exhibitors who came out as well. We had a very successful Central PA GIS Day 🌏🗺️
