It is with heavy hearts we inform you that firefighter Rocky Robinson passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026 after a short battle with cancer. Rocky joined the department in 2018 and served many roles during his years as a member. His loss is deeply felt not only within our department, but throughout the community he so proudly protected.

The governors burn ban has been extended until April 10th. While burn barrels and recreational fires are not addressed, at this time NO burning should be conducted.

We thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

Today Chief Tim Grubbs and Robin Darnall delivered the new ambulance to Banner County. The new ambulance was purchased in part with grant funds from State of Nebraska, it will replace the ambulance that has served Banner County since 2002 (24 years). Staffed with Paramedics and EMTs, we are excited to have an updated ambulance and equipment to better serve Banner County.

Banner County returned home Saturday night from the Morrill Fire. We experienced some of the most intense fire behavior I’ve seen. We worked with some great crews: Bushnell, Kimball, Mitchell, Big Springs, Chappell, Potter, Sidney, Holyoke, Lyman, Racket, Heart of the Hills, and Mullen. All the crews performed their best in some very difficult conditions. Estimated acreage is half a million acres burned.

At 10:15 on January 18, Banner County VFD was notified of a grass fire nine miles west of Hwy 71 on Hwy 88W and one mile north. Due to high winds and potential for spreading, mutual aid was requested from Lyman-Kiowa Volunteer Fire Department, LaGrange Fire Department, and Scottsbluff Rural Fire Protection District. The fire was quickly brought under control followed by extensive mop-up to ensure all embers had been extinguished. The last truck cleared at 2:30.

The cause was determined to be sparks from a downed power line due to the high winds. 76 acres of grass was burned as well as 1/4 mile of fence.

Thank you to everyone who assisted us. 13 fire trucks, 24 firemen, 2 officers from Banner County Sheriff Office, and local farmers for a disc and payloader.

Thank you also to all the local residents who called us about this fire. Due to your reports from multiple directions I was able to triangulate the location and we knew exactly where we were going. We are truly blessed to live where neighbors are still neighbors.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Mitchell Fire Department, friends, and family of Josh.
