Today, we reflect on the life of our former leader, Dorsey Howard, Jr., 20 years gone. Howard served at the Harrisburg Housing Authority, circa 1985 - 2001.
Reflecting upon his leadership, accomplishments and what could have been.
Compassionate about his family, extended family (HHA staff) and residents alike.
Staunch supporter of programs for public housing’s kids.
Collaborator, mover, shaker. Heart of gold.
Worked hard, played hard. Skillful golfer.
58 years young. Man, he left us too soon.

"Twenty years now
Where'd they go?
Twenty years
I don't know.
I sit and I wonder sometimes.
Where they've gone."

Did you know that August is Black Business Month? If you have never celebrated it before, you might consider finding a few Black Businesses to support this month!

August is National Black Business Month and Black Enterprise is celebrating National #BlackBusinessMonth with a series of articles that shed a positive light on Black businesses large and small.
Black business owners make up roughly "10 percent of U.S. businesses and about 30 percent of all minority-owned businesses." According to the U.S. Census Bureau, that amounts to approximately two million companies owned by African Americans.
Historian John William Templeton and engineer Frederick E. Jordan Sr., founded National Black Business Month in August 2004 to “drive the policy agenda affecting the 2.6 million African-American businesses,” via National Day Calendar. Look out for these stories and share in support. We could feature your business!

Harrisburg teens spend the summer cleaning up neighborhoods: ‘It does actually change my view’

Our youth are doing the work. They are investing time and energy in creating cleaner communities. We are simply supporting them in their efforts and teaching them life skills along the way. It is a blessing the see how the Harrisburg community is celebrating and supporting our young people. Let's keep this going!
#MoreThanJustHousing

When some parents can't get their kids to simply make their beds, these city students are out hitting the streets each day to pick up trash and learn more about the environment. They collect 50 to 100 pounds of trash daily.

Another day, another cleaner neighborhood! Today, our youth learned about where Harrisburg’s water comes from, how it’s cleaned, and where it goes. A few of the teams met at 3rd and Emerald to speak with Capital Region Water about how rain gardens work and how we can take care of them. We also spoke with PennLive.com about the impact that the program is having on the lives of our youth.

Have you been noticing that the streets are a tad bit cleaner in Harrisburg? The teens of our Environmental Teen Corps Summer Growth Program have been busy. We are thankful for all the neighbors who have stopped to share an encouraging word or cold beverage with our youth. Make sure to stop and cheer on our youth when you see them in your neighborhood. They are working hard to keep our community clean while building leadership skills! Learn more about the program, it's mission, and impact at www.authorityteen.com!

We are currently holding our public info session to present our Move To work plan and application. If accepted into the MTW Program, HHA plans to implement incentives into the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8 ) to recruit more landlord participation and serve more of the needs of Harrisburg residents. If we become a part of the MTW program, HHA plans to use the program as means for redeveloping public housing and to better support property owners in the Housing Choice Voucher Program and community.

Have you heard about the Cornerstone in Uptown Harrisburg project?

Cornerstone In Uptown Harrisburg is a project designed to eliminate blighted vacant lots, reduce crime, create affordable housing for homeowners, and cultivate a newfound pride in the community surrounding the Camp Curtin YMCA. The first phase of the project will be four newly-constructed single-family houses. The houses will be 1,800 square feet equipped with four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and off-street parking.

The vacant lots are located on Jefferson Street in the rear of the Camp Curtin YMCA facility. The properties’ numbers on Woodbine Street are 632, 634, 638, 640, 642, 644, 646, and 648 – all of which have been vacant for the last five years. Check out current renderings and more!
