Hello MVAO family and welcome to the first installment of our informative piece titled, "On the Front Lines of Education."

In these monthly installments we will showcase a different veteran from the various HACC campuses that they attend. These veterans are actively engaged in their respective curriculum, while also performing activities that promote the enhancement and enrichment of the community around them.

This month we introduce George L. Brown, a veteran who hails from the USMC and proud of his Devil Dog heritage. George is a current student working on his Philosophy Major at Lancaster HACC campus for the past 3 years, going to classes every Fall and Spring semester. George exhumes a calm, warm, and professional atmosphere when he is performing his duties or during a casual conversation in the hallways. During the interview he jokingly mentioned how his friends sometime characterize him as, he explains they see him as a "Modern Day Renaissance Man."

George is a very accomplished student with various positions and acclamation. Some of George's most notable positions include being President of the SGA from 2016-2017, serving on the academic appeals committee, and currently being a student worker in the counseling office, all at the Lancaster Campus. Some of George's more prestigious acclamation's include being a Phi Theta Kappa honoree, being awarded the Bucknell University Scholarship, and being on the campuses Dean's List multiple times.

During his time in the Marine Corps George attained the rank of Corporal of which he performed various duties and responsibilities. Most notably George mentions is that he performed forward observation while attached to infantry and mobilized units. George also referenced his time performing humanitarian efforts during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which he said was a rewarding time for himself.

George exhibits characteristics that are inherent with being a service member and demonstrates the level of honor and commitment above and beyond what is expected of him. To that end I was not surprised by his motivational comment for new and current veteran students. His words were "I give credit to the USMC for instilling intestinal fortitude to have accomplished all of my goals to give back to the community and never stop moving forward."

All of us in the MVAO family are proud to call George our brother in arms while we wage our separate battles in what we call the "On the Front Lines of Education."
