Do you remember on April 20th when I spoke at the County Commissioners meeting about the real needs in our schools?

Many of those needs were included in the proposed budget.

The very items I highlighted that day are now also on the list of items that may not be funded.

These aren’t extras. These are supports that impact classrooms, staff, and students every single day.

I shared what that really means for our schools:
• Social workers serving over 1,000 students each
• Counselors stretched thin supporting over 1,500 504 plans
• Teachers facing burnout, low starting pay, and limited growth after 15 years
• Safety and communication gaps in our transportation system
• Growing needs for multilingual support and updated curriculum

These are not extras. These are real needs in our classrooms right now.

When we choose not to have the conversation, it sends a message, and our community is paying attention.
I wanted to reshare a post from a few days ago to help clear up some confusion.

The iPad request in the proposed budget is not for one-to-one devices in K–3 classrooms.

Take a look at the visual in this post for a clear breakdown of what’s actually being requested and why it matters for our students and teachers.
Take a moment to watch and decide for yourself.

Right now, there has not yet been a formal opportunity for the school board to present its full budget needs directly to the county commissioners.
My hope is that one day they will hear what our students needs are in the district and why they are important. A county budget workshop will likely happen in June.
It needs to happen before final budget decisions are made. Our students, teachers, and families deserve that level of communication and collaboration. Don’t you agree?

Staff Appreciation Week starts tomorrow!

One of the best parts of education is watching students discover how big the world really is and helping them believe they have a place in it.

Thankful for educators everywhere who encourage curiosity, confidence, and growth in students every single day! Thankful for the extra words of encouragement and reassurance educators give to my very own children. I appreciate you!

And thankful for the staff I work alongside every week here in Cabarrus County! Teaching is a noble profession and I love it!

The many hats we wear, the countless hours spent, and the above and beyond efforts given to ensure students receive the support they need do not go unnoticed.

With EOG and EOC testing approaching, I’m especially grateful for the extra time, preparation, patience, and care educators pour into supporting our diverse learners and learning styles.

Hats off to every educator continuing to show up for students each and every day. Happy staff appreciation week!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Teacher mental health matters. Student mental health matters.

I’m thankful for the educators who go beyond academics and remind students they are important, capable, and that they belong. Sometimes encouragement, patience, and a trustworthy staff member can make a lasting difference in a child’s life.

I respect that people have different views on how to advocate for public education, but history shows that change rarely happens because people stayed quiet and waited.

Educators, parents, and community members have written emails, attended meetings, made phone calls, and shared concerns for years. Many still feel unheard. At some point, people gather together because they love their schools and believe our students and teachers deserve more.

I’m standing with NCAE today and I’m saying we are stronger together and enough is enough. For many of us, it is about fighting for fully funded schools, better teacher pay, more support staff, and respect for public education. We are bleeding teachers and they work overtime everyday with over 50 tabs open in their mind in any given hour!

Protests and public advocacy have always been part of how Americans push leaders to pay attention when something feels unfair or unsustainable. Also when it feels like it’s not heard. That is true in education too.
I am here because our kids and families are worth showing up for.

My challenge to the naysayers is this: spend three weeks in our classrooms with pure intentions and an open mind. Experience what it truly means to teach, support, encourage, and lead our future generation every single day.

You would walk away with a much deeper understanding of what educators carry and why fully funding public schools is not optional. It is an investment in our children, our communities, and our future.

It would’ve been proper to actually have a conversation about our schools needs so that this could’ve been clarified.

I am disheartened to see what is transpiring here. As a teacher, parent, and someone who works closely with families every day, I think people misunderstand what equity really means.

Equity is not about taking away from one child to give to another. It is about making sure every child has access to the support they need to be successful. Not all students walk into school with the same opportunities, resources, or challenges.

When cuts happen to programs tied to equity, families feel it. Students lose support. Teachers are stretched even thinner. Parents are left trying to fill gaps that schools were helping meet. Parents are stretched thin with the way the economy is going these days. These are real children with real needs, not political talking points. I can talk about each item, line by line but what stands out the most is Vex robotics, athletics, the arts, and band!

Every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued in our schools. Standing up for that should never be controversial. County Comissioners and legislators, please see the real needs of our kids and families in our schools and fund them. https://substack.com//note/p-195828415?r=41kukn&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action
