The North Branch of the Susquehanna River in northeastern Pennsylvania has been voted the 2023 Pennsylvania River of the Year!

Flowing from the New York state line to Sunbury near Shikellamy State Park at the confluence with the Susquehanna River West Branch, the Susquehanna River North Branch meanders through eight Pennsylvania counties, including: Susquehanna, Bradford, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Columbia, Montour, and Northumberland.

A water trail, the Susquehanna River North Branch is widely used by paddlers, anglers, recreational boaters, and wildlife enthusiasts.

PACD was recently awarded a Community Conservation Partnerships Program Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to offer Lawn Conversion training and mini-grants to Pennsylvania’s conservation districts. The lawn conversion program will help the Commonwealth achieve a goal of planting 5,000 acres of upland forest and 5,000 acres of meadow by 2025.

The Cumberland County, PA - Conservation District completed two Best Management Practice (BMP) projects this year through the Conservation Excellence Grant (CEG) Program. The installed roofed heavy-use and waste stacking areas will reduce nutrients and sediment from entering the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Huntingdon County Conservation District planted 16 acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer along a tributary to Crooked Creek at a farm in Huntingdon County. The buffer will help to prevent water pollution.

The project was paid for through PACD’s multi-functional buffer sub-grant program.
