There’s been a historical lack of support for minority-owned businesses from the government—however, under the Shapiro-Davis administration we will never leave any community behind.
For the first time ever, as part of the 2023-24 state budget, the Commonwealth is investing state funds into the Historically Disadvantaged Business Program.

On Friday I joined the Protect Our Care "Lower Costs, Better Care" bus tour at a stop in Uniontown.
Health care access and medical debt are big problems in southwestern Pennsylvania, but we're working to address those issues with common-sense solutions.

New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, who made history as the first Black woman to serve as speaker of the state Assembly, died Tuesday. She was 71.
By rebuilding our infrastructure, we're also helping to create good-paying, family-sustaining jobs. We’re creating ladders of opportunity with jobs that often don’t require a college degree and can’t be shipped overseas.
However, we’re in a unique moment right now — we have record low unemployment. That’s a good thing. But it also means, we need more workers trained up to do these good-paying, family-sustaining jobs.
Over the past few months, I’ve visited career and technical schools and apprenticeship programs. Time and time again, we’ve heard how much demand there is for these sorts of programs, not just for workers but for employers. We have workforce shortages in local government, health care, education, tech and more.
We've also heard from the building trades, they need more folks who can help meet the demand being created by the unprecedented investments we’re making in revitalizing our infrastructure.
Today’s announcement is designed to help meet that demand.
Hurt people hurt people.
But -- as I heard on my Safer Communities tour earlier this month -- healed people can help heal people, too.
Investing in these sorts of programs can help save lives and restore communities.
"Young people in many cities in this country have so much untreated, unhealed trauma," said Shawn Ginwright, a Harvard professor whose nonprofit won an $885,000 contract with Philadelphia schools.
We are losing too many young people.
We need a comprehensive gun safety strategy that includes common-sense legislation like universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders ("red flag" laws). It also includes addressing root causes.
Gun su***des reached an all-time high in 2022, and the gun su***de rate among Black teens surpassed that of white teens for the first time on record.
It's Day -- the date it takes for Black women's earnings to catch up to the average annual earnings for white men.
Over a lifetime, that equals nearly $1M in lost income for the average Black woman.
for equal pay.
In 2023, Black women still make 67 cents for each dollar most white men make — but we're not powerless in reclaiming our time and pay.
