Protect yourself and your crew from the heat while enjoying your big backyard.

• Stay hydrated — water is your best friend. Skip the sugary stuff and alcohol; they’ll only dehydrate you.
• Cool off in the shade whenever you can.
• Save the tough hikes or activities for early morning or later in the day.
• Wear light, loose, breathable clothes to stay cool.

Members of the Shawnee National Forest had a fun day spending time with the public by talking about recreational opportunities on the forest and sharing resources and information about forest management practices like prescribed fires and active timber management. Guests had the chance to check out some tree products up close and learn about some of the animals that call the forest home. Events like these give us the chance to meet people where they are and help to encourage them to enjoy your big backyard. Thanks to everyone who stopped by.

The Forest Service is publishing a notice of intent to revise the current Travel Management Rule and initiate a 30-day comment period.

This proposed revision will modernize motor vehicle use decision making on Forest Service lands in alignment with Administration priorities that will ultimately expand outdoor recreation access, strengthen rural economies, maintain safe and sustainable transportation systems, and support working lands.

All are encouraged to provide comment over the next 30 days through the Federal eRulemaking portal https://www.regulations.gov/.

Your dog might be great off-leash. The problem is nobody else on the trail knows that — not the family with a toddler, not the hiker with a dog reactive to others, not the deer bedded down thirty feet off the path. A leash closes that gap for everyone, including your pup.
