Every morning, our students start the day with a session called Improv. Students go through various improvisational acting and team building exercises to get their minds working and ready for the work ahead. Not only do these exercises help students think more creatively, they are also a way of illustrating important concepts that are useful in the video game industry.
For instance, this is a video of them doing an exercise where they must pass the ball to one another in the same order over and over again. With each round, they try to do it a little faster. Eventually, more balls are added that follow a different path. The significance of this exercise is that it directly relates to the idea that each student is part of a team that is trying to accomplish a singular goal. If someone messes up, takes their time, or "drops the ball", they impede everyone else's progress. This is a great metaphor for actually working on a game development team where many people hold many responsibilities, and those responsibilities are often dependent on someone else's progress or allow someone to make more progress on their own tasks.
Being a good team player is just as important as being a good artist or programmer.
