Hunger-Free Lancaster County

Hunger-Free Lancaster County Ensuring sustainable access to three healthy meals a day for all Lancastrians.

We are a coalition of more than 30 organizations representing six sectors: business, nonprofit, education, government, faith-based and media. Collectively, we are committed to one mission: building a hunger-free Lancaster County by creating a nutritious, accessible and sustainable food system. Together with our chairman, retired State Senator Mike Brubaker, we have set an audacious goal: to ensure sustainable access to three healthy meals a day for every Lancastrian by 2018.

Here's information on upcoming SNAP rule changes that will impact thousands of Lancastrians in coming months. While these rules are more or less final, you can still voice your opposition to your representatives in Congress and US Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue (contact information included in post).

There has been a lot of talk lately about changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the correct name for what many people still call “food stamps.”  What is …

WellSpan Health will begin offering emergency food vouchers to its patients in northern and eastern Lancaster County in February. The vouchers will be redeemable at the food banks located at Ephrata Area Social Services and CrossNet Ministries.

WellSpan Health medical staff recently began asking patients questions about the conditions in the places where they live, learn, work, and play that affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes – the so-called “social determinants.” It became clear that many WellSpan patients in the northern and eastern part of the county are food insecure.

WellSpan has not finalized the criteria for what constitutes a food emergency; more information will be circulated once details of the program are announced.

A big shout out to the Lancaster County Project for the Needy for its 33rd successful holiday meal giveaway! 300 volunteers met in the pre-dawn cold at Clipper Stadium on the Saturday before Christmas and compiled and distributed 1,100 boxes of holiday meal ingredients before 8 am. The LCPN is headed up by HFLC member Tom Fasnacht from Fulton Bank. Seen in the photo are David and Sheri Wolf, who drove in from Ephrata for the second year in a row. With Sheri on disability and David's hours recently reduced at his fabricator job in Morgantown, the Wolf said they are grateful for the help at the holidays.

Three HFLC partners -- CAP, Central PA Food Bank and Lancaster General Health -- have expanded resources for low-income individuals in Columbia Borough through the opening of a Fresh Express food pantry.

Fresh produce and other perishables, including milk and eggs, will be distributed between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. every fourth Friday year-round at Park Elementary School (except for November, when it will be held on the fifth Friday).

Nutrition educators and recipe ideas will be available at each distribution, so customers can learn about the health benefits of fresh foods and how to prepare them at home.

Many thanks, too, to the Columbia Borough School District for its help in making this happen!

Here's food for thought: Food banks nationwide serve some 4 billion meals each year, but that represents just 10 percent of what food stamps (SNAP) provide with a current annual budget of $71 billion. This is a great article about what food banks are doing to preserve SNAP funding because they’re worried that they’ll be flooded with needy families if benefits are cut. Read down to the part about the "Silver Tsunami" -- the rising number of seniors in the suburbs needing food assistance.

The charities fear they'll be overwhelmed if government benefits are reduced.

Power Packs ! Want a project for your family, church, or business to take on this year to help Power Packs Project? You can collect the plastic bags that we use for distributions every week. We need every month! All you need to do is collect plastic grocery bags (Weis, Giant, Target, etc.) then roll them into groups of ten and put a rubber band around them. Once you have your collection, please contact Joyce Stephens, Distribution Coordinator, at: [email protected] to set up a time to deliver the bags to our warehouse. Thank you and please SHARE!

SEPTEMBER IS HUNGER AWARENESS MONTH

According to the national organization, Feeding America, 1 in 9 Americans faces food insecurity everyday. The pandemic has greatly impacted our country in the realm of food insecurity. It’s estimated that 42 million Americans may be experiencing food insecurity as a result. Hunger-Free Lancaster County, a coalition committed to building a hunger-free Lancaster County, states that the local food insecurity rate is at an estimated 9% with 16% of children living in poverty (39.9% for children living in the city of Lancaster).

We are so thankful for amazing community partners, like The Wittel Farm - yesterday we received fresh and gorgeous zucchini’s and cucumbers to give to our families in their boxes. This ministry project between The Lutheran Camping Corporation of Central Pennsylvania, the Lower Susquehanna Synod ELCA, and Hunger-Free Lancaster County reclaims a portion of the acreage gifts to the LCC for its original use, farming. The crops harvested are donated to local families in need, and we think that’s fantastic! Thank you! Check out Wittel Farm & consider supporting them through a donation or volunteering.
Join our friends at The Wittel Farm and Hunger-Free Lancaster County to help with planting Saturday, May 15 and 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at 1753 Mill Rd, Elizabethtown.

Last year the farm donated nearly 20,000 pounds of produce to keep our local community fed; let's help exceed that goal this year!
Check out what our president and CEO, Kevin Ressler, has to say about the extension of free school meals across . Keep up the good work, Hunger-Free Lancaster County!
