Mayor Julie Burke-Van Luvanee

Mayor Julie Burke-Van Luvanee I am so honored to be serving the residents of Harrisburg. Thank you for all of your support!

Bittersweet, but this is my last post as this amazing community's Mayor. It has been an honor, pleasure and humbling experience to serve each and every one of you. I thank you for the honor and am very grateful that this was part of God's plan for me and this community.

Tonight, Mayor-Elect Wenck will take the oath to carry on the vision and values that have been laid by all of those who volunteered, loved and nurtured Harrisburg before us. This includes houses of worship, school boards, city councils, city boards, civic organizations and every kind action by every resident that has forged our "home town" feel and culture. I am very excited for Mayor Wenck to build on the successes of the past, implement his vision and lead us into the future. Please keep him, his family and all elected officials in your prayers.

God Bless You.
God Bless America.

Update: Sheriff Swenson and the LCSD have confirmed these as false. Thank you, LCSD!

All,

I have seen the rumors on FB and can assure you that I am 100% positive that our Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, SD Highway Patrol, Minnehaha Sheriff's Office and the Sioux Falls Police Department are intensely monitoring, planning for and collaborating responses for disturbances in our area.

Please be safe tonight (as always), leave any outside lights on if possible and pray for our law enforcement.

Mayor Julie

Hopes for a peaceful protest today and prayers for the safety of our law enforcement community.

However tonight goes, what does tomorrow bring? Another protest in another town? More talk?

Public involvement in local, state and federal government is at an all time low. Apathy in everything from voting to holding elected officials accountable is the norm... today, for 2 or 3 hours, march if you'd like but I challenge that tomorrow, you GET INVOLVED in your government. Help root out corruption instead of saying, "I don't want to get involved" or allow yourself to be treated less than an employer of your city councilman. Stand up and question status quo.

Yes, today there will be speeches and marching but unless YOU get involved and start holding people accountable every single day, silence is acceptance...

2 to 3 hours a year to protest and talk about issues will not solve the following:
A potentially corrupt police department
Ineffective elected officials
Lack of oversight of spending your tax dollars
Allowance of inequality (sexism, racism, agism, etc)
Bold face lies from your government
Covering up bad behavior
Cronyism
Looking the other way to allow corruption

YOU need to GET INVOLVED and hold your elected officials (on all levels) accountable!!!

To the men and women we will never know, nor they knew us but fought for our freedom. Thank you.

Please join me in paying special recognition this week to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Also, please remember the families left behind.

While many Americans are focused on which restaurant they can patronize, blaming politicians for the shutdown and living for today, if this event would not have happened 75 years ago, none of this may even matter today... as we'd be living in a VERY different world. God bless all of our servicemen who gave thieir lives to get to this day May 8th 1945. Also, bless all of our allies who worked with the US in a pivitol time of terror.

If you are unaware of what I am talking about, I suggest you do some research to appreciate history. It may help you appreciate Winston Churchill, decision making, hatred, complacency and real leadership.

Happy Nurse's Day and Week.

While the pandemic has been devistating, it has also helped bring a whole new appreciation of what an incredible and crucial role nurses play every. single. day.

Sliding into 2nd base and broken ankle - there.
3 month old baby with a scary rash - there.
In patient care - there.
At Grandma's nusing home - there.
Kidney stones - there.
School care - there.
Heart surgery - there.
And the list goes on and on...Every. Single. Day

"Thank you" just isn't enough to repay you for your dedication to our public welfare....

We are blessed to have Jesse's optimism, experience and visionary ideas to help our community move forward.

I expect to hear great ideas and collaborative efforts coming to Harrisburg!

It's an interesting time to be starting any new job -- but Jesse Fonkert is up to the challenge. Meet the new leader of the Minnehaha County and Lincoln County Economic Development Associations.

Quick update:

The concept of "shelter in place" was not on the agenda tonight and we will not be following Sioux Falls' previous direction. For updates please reference last Fridays 3 hour SF City Council meeting re: a change in direction.

Our ordinance, however, will become in effect this Thursday, April 23rd. GREAT point tonight from Alderman Tank that if you see and want to report, do so to the Sheriff's Department on their non energy number: (605) 764-5651 please.

We still promote the Governor's Executive Order where we ask businesses and residents to adhere to the CDC guidelines. Harrisburg is extremely blessed that most businesses have already made innovative and adaptive improvements to continue to do business.

Stay safe and healthy, Harrisburg!
