Happy Holidays from the Harrisburg Library Guild!
The Harrisburg Library Guild is a local non-profit organization that works hard to raise funds for a new, larger library and community center for citizens in Harrisburg and the surrounding communities. You will likely recognize our organization from attending our events in the past, or from your patronage at our local library. We are a member of the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce; and feel it’s important to support the businesses in our communities.
We were thrilled by the remodel of the Harrisburg Public Library, which reopened this November. It has a little additional space, plus new shelving and room for the collection and patrons. However, that only fulfills a short-term goal. A community our size should have a Library that is over 3,500 sq. ft.! In addition, there needs to be more space and equipment for our patrons, as well as all the additional Library Programs that the Library Board and City are now funding.
Therefore, we are especially excited to announce that the City has purchased the former Nixon property, located right next to City Hall by the river, to be the future home of the Harrisburg Public Library and Community Center! The City and HRA Board/City Council support a new library/community building and in addition to the purchase price of the property, have set aside $150,000 in future funds to support this effort. However, the City is not able to fully fund a new building.
The Guild, at the heart of its non-profit mission, is therefore helping to raise the additional funds needed to fund a new Library/Community Center. The Guild holds several fund-raisers a year, making steady progress towards our goal of $1.113 million. We invite you to join us at our Sweetheart Tea scheduled for February 15, 2020, and our annual Silent Auction at Bennett Winery later in the year. However, we have been told by major grant donors that we must show ‘Outstanding Support’ from the community, in order to successfully apply for grants that will give our City the resources it needs.
