NEW CITY HALL - Feb 1960
The city of Harrisburg has purchased the Vandiver Hotel property on the square across from the Poinsett County Courthouse and will turn it into a city hall and city jail, Mayor J. D. May and the City Council announced. Purchase price was $10,000. The property bought includes the large brick building that was the Vandiver Hotel and the vacant lot on the North side of the building. Hobson Vandiver of Memphis and his brother, Circuit Clerk Jim Vandiver, represented the Vandiver estate in the transaction. The jail and city offices will be moved into the building immediately, and later space will be provided for one of the city tire trucks. The city of Harrisburg bought the property with a small down payment, and the balance will be paid at the rate of $100 per month. By bringing all of the offices of the city together from their present rented quarters, several dollars each month will be saved, the mayor said.
The Bob Downs Insurance Agency, which is located in the northwest corner of the building, will remain in its present location.
