With great sadness, our friend and Board Member of Rebuilding Together Greater Harrisburg, Roger Olson, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Our organization will never be the same without him. Roger was a very special individual who, over the past 20 years, committed himself to helping our most vulnerable homeowners live in a safe and healthy home.

Roger also spent countless hours traveling to all the homes located in four counties. He conducted an evaluation as to what repairs the homeowner needed ensuring their home was safe, warm and dry. Afterwards Roger would write a report as to his findings which were then presented to the board members.

Our volunteers enjoyed working with Roger. Rebuilding Together will be forever grateful for his involvement with the organization, friendships that were forged and the difference he made within the community and the many lives he touched.

“Bright” Ideas for National Energy Awareness Month
October 1, 2025

by Oluchi Pitts, Associate, Marketing at Rebuilding Together National

October is National Energy Awareness Month, a time to recognize how energy shapes our daily lives and how small improvements can make a significant difference for our wallets, our health and our environment.

At Rebuilding Together, we know that energy efficiency is more than just a buzzword. For many of the neighbors we serve, high utility bills can mean choosing between heating their homes or putting food on the table. Inefficient systems not only waste energy but also strain family budgets and compromise health and safety.

That’s why our repairs often go beyond fixing what’s broken. By adding insulation, sealing drafts or installing energy-efficient appliances and lighting, we help ensure homes are not only safer but also more affordable and sustainable in the long run.

Energy awareness starts with the choices we make at home. Here are a few small steps anyone can take to make their space more energy efficient:

Seal it up: Check doors and windows for leaks. Weatherstripping can make an impact on heating and cooling costs.

Upgrade your lighting: Switching to LED bulbs uses up to 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Think smart: A programmable thermostat can help reduce energy waste by automatically adjusting temperatures when you’re away or asleep.

Unplug and save: Electronics and chargers still use energy when not in use. Remember to unplug them to cut costs.

This month, let’s shine a light on the importance of energy efficiency. Not just for our planet, but for our communities.

Our Annual Event Day, held on Saturday, April 26 was a huge success despite the morning rain. Everyone worked in the rain and was able to accomplish most everything on their project task list. Two job sites were interviewed by ABC news and Mayor Wanda Williams stopped by at the house on Wiconisco Street.

Work was done in the 5 Senses Gardens, in the City of Harrisburg, Swatara Township, Paxtang Boro, Penbrook Boro, Steelton, Middletown, Mechanicsburg, Carlisle, Newville and New Bloomfield. Thank you to all the House Captains who graciously gave of their time to visit with the homeowner, assess the repairs, purchase the materials and supplies and lead the group of volunteers.

Thank you to all the groups that donated their time and talent to help our homeowners live in a safe and healthy home:
