Meet Brandan Shur, one of our speakers at TVA’s 2026 Annual Meeting!

Brandan is a Ph.D. student researcher in horticulture at Virginia Tech focused on Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) systems, with an emphasis on substrates and rootzone health and disease management in modern production environments. His training includes work in a horticultural substrates research program, and his current work centers on translating rootzone principles into grower-relevant practices for greenhouse and indoor systems.

His session, “Rootzone Performance in Container Horticulture: What Growers Need from Substrate Components,” will provide a horticulture and end-use perspective on what growers and CEA operators need from substrate components, including air-water balance, rewetting, stability/settling, buffering capacity, cleanliness, and, most importantly, consistency.

A study in Biochar reveals that vermiculite-modified rice straw biochar, particularly at 700 °C, significantly reduces bacterial community interaction (by 32% in red soil compared to unmodified biochar at 300 °C) which leads to a stronger negative priming effect on soil organic carbon mineralization. This finding offers a new strategy for improving carbon sequestration, with VBC700 excelling.

Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additive and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was recently asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of vermiculite as a technological feed additive for all poultry and ornamental birds, porcine species, equines, leporids, camelids, pets and other non-food-producing animals.

The FEEDAP Panel concluded that vermiculite is efficacious as anticaking agent in feed, when used at 10,000 mg/kg complete feed.
