Thank you to the 50+ housing policy experts, legislators, county officials, planners, developers and practitioners who shared their experience and great ideas in the PA Housing Affordability Summit on May 9 at Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA), convened by 10,000 Friends Policy Council and PA Chapter of the American Planning Association Legislative Committee. Facilitated by Mike McKenna of Work Wisdom LLC and our team of volunteer subject-matter experts, attendees envisioned a better future with an abundance of equitable housing across the state and then dug into finding statutory and regulatory bipartisan policy solutions for both overcoming barriers to building housing and developing incentives would increase affordable housing inventory.

Survey data showed that zoning restrictions are the top barrier to increasing housing inventory across the state, followed by land availability, financing, and state and federal regulations. Incentives such as modernized zoning, LIHTC for smaller developments, regional land banks, and fast track permitting were just a few of the top incentives in the discussion. We’re looking forward to our next conversation as we continue to build a bipartisan council to work together to increase affordable housing in communities across Pennsylvania.

If you would like to get involved in the future housing policy conversations, please contact us https://tinyurl.com/3urk78je. 10,000 Friends and APA PA Legislative Committee will host a second summit in Western PA this fall and we are looking for collaborative partners.

While buying a home can feel like a serious undertaking today, it used to be even more challenging for many Americans. Before 1968, there were no laws outlawing discrimination when buying a home. This meant that a buyer could be turned down by lenders and real estate companies merely because of thei...

“Pennsylvania’s core communities are at their best when we provide options for all. Our downtown Main Street districts and neighborhood Elm Street districts thrive when pedestrians of all ages and mobilities feel safe to explore our communities.”

PDC joins dozens of national, state and regional advocacy organizations in offering the Shapiro administration concrete recommendations to accelerate trail and active transportation networks. “Pennsylvania’s core communities are at their best when we provide options for all. Our downtown Main Street districts and neighborhood Elm Street districts thrive when pedestrians of all ages and mobilities feel safe to explore our communities," said Julie Fitzpatrick, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Downtown Center. “And, when we provide recreational and commuting options for our bicyclists and afford other transit options to our residents and workforce, we’re supporting places where people choose to live.” To see the full letter, petition or add your organization to the endorsement letter, read the full release:

“CBO reports often provide a one-stop-shop for the latest forecasts on a subject. In this instance, the biggest forward-looking question is: how quickly will electric vehicles displace internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as a percentage of new sales, and as a percentage of the on-road fleet?”

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has released a helpful research overview entitled Emissions of Carbon Dioxide in the Transportation Sector.

"Given its world-class anchor institutions, promising urban ecosystems, and diverse talent, Pennsylvania possesses vast potential to invent, grow, and participate in the next crucial technology platforms. However, if it is to meet that potential, the state must reclaim its history of supportive policy innovation."

Few states possess as many of the assets needed for innovation-driven growth as Pennsylvania. Yet, Pennsylvania has not been able to convert its assets into abundant, high-quality economic growth. Pennsylvania needs to unlock its innovation potential.
