During , we’re honoring some of the incredible women who have put their voices and hearts behind the fight to end Alzheimer’s and other dementia.

Pauline Phillips, the women who you may know as Dear Abby, was never afraid to bring tough topics into public discussion. Alzheimer's disease was no exception. She gave a voice to those living with Alzheimer’s in the early days of the Association, and remained a strong advocate throughout her life.

In 1980, long before her own diagnosis with this devastating disease, she brought dementia into the spotlight when she published a letter from a woman who had recently learned her 60-year-old husband had Alzheimer's.

Dear Abby's reply began with her most important message: You are not alone.

She directed the woman, “Desperate in New York,” to the newly formed Alzheimer’s Association. Within two weeks, the association was inundated with more than 22,000 pieces of mail requesting information.

Dear Abby put Alzheimer’s disease in the public spotlight, and reassured everyone living with the disease, and those they loved, that they were not alone. In honor of Dear Abby and all of those who her legacy has helped, we continue to fight.
