Twice a year the Arts Council sets up a craft table for the kids at a public event. One is during the tree lighting at Christmas at the Friendship Center/ Lower Paxton Township Parks & Recreation. The other event is coming to soon... what yearly event takes place across the nation on the first Tuesday of August?? Ours is held at George Park. If you can tell me here what that event is, I’ll give you a surprise at the event in August!

“The Lower Paxton Township Arts Council is pleased to announce the following planned events:

Tuesday February 27 , 7-8:30 p.m.,the Arts Council in cooperation with the Friends of the East Shore Area Library will host an Author’s Night featuring local writer and educator Richard Fellinger, "Made to Break Your Heart." The novel is based in the Harrisburg area and deals realistically with marital and career challenges, not to mention the ups and downs of coaching Little League baseball. The event is free with light refreshments.

Friday March 2, at 6:30 p.m., a showing of the 1959 comedy " Operation Petticoat" starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis preceded by brief commentary from film aficionado, scholar and former Central Dauphin East drama teacher, Jamie Caffier will be held at the Friendship Center. Free with Popcorn and other light refreshments.

Saturday, April 7, 7-9 p.m. “Star Struck Saturday Night” featuring the Lower Paxton Township Variety Band. Listen or dance to favorites performed by the popular band. Tickets in advance for $10.00 or at the door for $15.00, with proceeds to assist local teachers in acquiring art materials for classroom use. In addition to the great music, there will be plenty of good things to nibble on ... a fun evening for all.

Everyone is busy with the holidays, but there might be time to read a relatively short book. The next Book Discussion sponsored by the Lower Paxton Arts Council is scheduled for January 16, at 3:00 p.m. , instead of 7:00 p.m. We will meet at the Friendship Center and the selected book is Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates (152 pages). Aqua themes will be chosen and distributed to the registered groups. Let us know if you are interested in participating. High school art departments are encouraged to participate! The Lower Paxton Arts Council is extremely pleased to announce this year’s jurors for our 2017 What We Value Photo Contest. Winners will be announced tomorrow, Saturday, July 15th.

** Caleb Smith is a filmmaker/photographer residing in Harrisburg. He teaches film, photography and humanities courses at Harrisburg University. He also is part of the volunteer operated film and sound organization Moviate, which bring filmmakers and musicians to Harrisburg as well as programs the annual Artsfest Film Festival.

** Wendy S Sweigart is a Visual Arts Instructor at the School of the Arts at Susquehanna Township High School and is a practicing painter. In the past, she served as Director of Outreach Education for the Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM), and as the primary educator and trainer for the Museum's award-winning innovative cultural arts program, the VanGo! Museum on Wheels.

** Tonya Morgan Leibfried is a photographer pursuing her craft in Central PA. She earned her photography degree from Antonelli College in Cincinnati. Tonya loves all different kinds of photography, volunteers with numerous non-profit organizations in the area, and lives here with her husband and two children.
