Mama Elisé smiles every time she pulls back the mulch and sees the rich black soil underneath.

It was one of the first things she wanted to show us.

Mama Elisé lives outside Gemena with her husband and their five children. Both she and her husband are living with HIV. When his health made it impossible for him to keep working, she stepped in.

Today she's planting spinach.

She says learning a no till method has completely changed the way she gardens. Keeping the soil covered with mulch helps hold moisture in the ground, and seeing the rich black soil underneath gives her confidence that this season will be different.

Through the AFCA Congo project, she received seeds, gardening supplies, and a basin she can use to carry vegetables to market once they're ready to harvest.

Soon she'll have fresh vegetables for her family and extra produce to sell at the market.

The faces behind the Miwani garden project.

These women grow fresh vegetables, earn fair wages, and use that income to help feed their families, pay school fees, and put a little aside for emergencies.

This year they're also preparing for whatever the weather brings. The gardens are covered with mulch to help the soil hold moisture during dry periods. Ditches have been dug around the gardens, too, in case heavy rains come.

The weather has become much harder to predict, so planning ahead is part of the work now.

I love seeing the care and thought that goes into a project like this. Every harvest represents months of preparation, hard work, and hope for the families who depend on it.

The chickens in Miwani have been keeping the team busy lately. 🐔

They've started growing azolla, a protein rich plant, and fermenting chicken feed. Those two changes have cut feeding costs and made it possible to keep expanding the project.

The next goal is one we've been looking forward to. This year, the team plans to breed their own chicks instead of buying them.

It's fun to see practical ideas like these paying off.

This photo made us smile.

Two weeks ago, this incubator arrived at Mother Amadea Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya. On average, six babies each month need an incubator there.

It's easy to look at this as just another piece of equipment. But for the next family whose newborn needs extra care, it will mean so much more.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. We can't wait to see the lives this incubator touches.

Sometimes the best update is simply a letter.

This one was written by a student in the Matopos region of Zimbabwe after families received safe toilets through AFCA's Sanitation and Hygiene program.

One sentence stayed with us:

"Because of you our families now have safety, dignity, and better health."

We're grateful to share these words with you because this thank you belongs to everyone who has helped make this work possible.

She wanted to thank you the best way she knew how. With a song. ❤️

Every rope she makes helps provide food and education for her grandchildren.

Through AFCA's Green Sisal Project in Miwani, Kenya, grandmothers are earning an income by making rope from sisal grown in their own community. It's simple work, but it gives them a way to care for the children who depend on them.

We thought the best thing to do was simply share her song with you.

💚 If you'd like, leave her a message in the comments. We'll share your encouragement with our team in Kenya.

A school day at Malibongwe Primary School in Zimbabwe, filmed in 2021.

Learning in the classroom. Time on the playground. A break for food and water. Friends enjoying each other's company.

When we think about education, it's often the ordinary moments that matter most.

We're grateful to support Malibongwe Primary School and the students who learn there each day.

A smile caught in the evening light.

Photos like this are a reminder that behind every report and statistic is a real person, a family, and a community.

Last year, AFCA's programs reached hundreds of thousands of people across five African countries.

This is one of the faces behind those numbers.

These photos arrived from Gemena, DRC.

Each of these field workers received a small plot of land, seeds, tools, and training.

This week, they were transplanting green onions in gardens of their own.

It's always encouraging to see something that started as a handful of seeds begin to take root. 🌱
