Pennsylvania has a new confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (), the state's first in a non-commercial, backyard flock.
The Department of Agriculture reminds all poultry owners – backyard flock owners and commercial producers – to keep their guard up to protect their birds from highly pathogenic avian influenza. Remember, your flock and your neighbors’ flocks depend on you!
Secretary Russell Redding reminds backyard bird owners and poultry and egg producers to stay vigilant, especially as wild bird migration season picks up again in the coming weeks.
🔸 Practice excellent biosecurity every day.
🔸 Everyone on the farm should clean clothes, and scrub boots or shoes with disinfectant and wash hands before and after contact with animals.
🔸 Keep equipment and vehicles clean, including all those entering your property.
🔸 Control birds and rodents who can carry and spread disease.
🔸 Keep your birds inside whenever possible and minimize the chance of contact with wild birds.
🔸 Clean under barn soffits and eliminate possible entry points for wild birds.
🔸 Eliminate standing water that may attract wild birds.
Poultry and eggs continue to be safe to eat. Human health is not at risk. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, avian influenza does not present an immediate public health concern.

Today was a fabulous day to celebrate Grow PA - Agriculture and Food Careers in Pennsylvania. For the past 7 years, a partnership of agribusiness and organizations have worked to build and expand an online resource for students, educators and parents with the sole focus on the numerous careers in PA Agriculture. Each year, the partners join forces to collaborate on a 'summer intern project' for the Ag and Food Careers in PA website. Today, the 2022 Summer interns presented their work to a panel of esteemed reviewers: Rep. Ecker; PDA Secretary Redding, Heidi Florey and Kerry Golden. We invite everyone to visit: https://www.agandfoodcareersinpa.com/ and see the great work accomplished.
