Our cadets were invited to the Detroit Yacht Club to participate in the morning ceremonies of their Fleet Review. We were able to tour the Detroit Fire Boat the Curtis Randolph and eat breakfast with their crew.

The Parade of Lights event was an amazing way to bring community together! Our cadets operated the Pride of Michigan in the lead position and we invited some very special guests to travel with us.
***BONUS*** we were able to have a Falconer and member of the Michigan Hawking Club, Kelly Martello present her beautiful raptors. She provided our cadets a plethora of information on her Red Tailed Hawk and Barn Owl! Incredible and informative 🦉🦅

Here are various pictures from our 8-day training on the Pride of Michigan. Our travels carried us from home port in Harrison Township to Port Austin.

04JUL2026: Happy Independence Day! We started this day with a tour of the Harbor Beach Lighthouse. We then headed South in Lake Huron to a shipwreck site. The wreck: The Storm Spirit, a two-masted wooden schooner that sank in Lake Huron on October 19, 1907. Our divers dove to 89 feet of water to view this ship with excellent visibility. Afterward we continued South to join Port Sanilac’s Independence Day celebration. Our cadets participated in a flag raising ceremony, officers fired our cannon from the ship, and we all watched a delightful fireworks display. Our cadets gave tours of the ship and shared their experiences with families from the week. Proud moments for each and every cadet as they conveyed to community members their favorite moments from the week as well as a plethora of information about the ship and their dives. 03JUL2026: Our dive today was on the Barbara Lyn Tug Boat. She is a 51-foot aluminum tugboat that sank in Lake Huron on October 1, 1990. She rests in about 20 feet of water and is situated roughly 12 miles north of Pointe aux Barques and Huron City, Michigan. Earlier, this morning cadets engaged in man overboard training and Fire Drill training where they deployed the pump and two fire hoses on the ship. This evening we arrived back in Harbor Beach.

02JUL2026: Friendships! Today it became increasing evident that our Sea Cadets have formed strong bonds through this training. The cadets dove the reefs again outside Port Austin Harbor Lighthouse, toured the lighthouse, went swimming off the ship, watched the boat we rescued 2 people from get salvaged, gave tours to folks who were interested in knowing more about our Sea Cadet Program and ship and most importantly took our 3rd trip of the training for ice cream! They are truly a special bunch of young men!

01JUL26: Underway early to Port Austin. Our dive plan included diving the reefs at Port Austin but beforehand cadets received training on navigating their dives while underwater. Captain Clyburn instructed on taking compass headings, making a square while diving and showing the cadets how to cover a grid when diving (for a possible rescue-dive). He further instructed on measuring the distance traveled underwater by counting kicks. Cadets practiced by measuring one of their steps and then walking the length of the ship to give an estimate of her (The Pride of Michigan’s) length and beam. We then checked the accuracy of our estimate using a tape measure. Cadets had the opportunity to take several dives, one before the storm rolled in and one after. it was remarkable to see what a storm does to the visibility in the water, even 20+ feet below the surface.
