Arkansans have reported receiving scam letters that look like official government tax notices. These letters claim consumers owe back taxes or could face tax liens, wage garnishments, or other penalties. The scammers pressure consumers to pay large upfront fees for supposed tax-relief services and may falsely claim to work with or contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

These scam letters are designed to create fear and urgency. Some direct consumers to call private companies that pretend to help resolve tax problems. These companies may urge consumers to stay on the line while they pretend to “contact the IRS” in an effort to obtain personal or financial information.

How Arkansans should respond:
- Do not call the number listed on the letter
- Do not share personal, banking, or financial information
- Do not make payments before verifying the company is legitimate
- Verify your tax status directly with the IRS: (800) 829-1040, and the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration: (501) 682-5000
- Check with your county office about any actual tax liens
- Request IRS transcripts to confirm your tax status
- Report suspicious letters to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), or the Office of the Attorney General
- Contact your bank or credit card company immediately if you made a payment

Words are even more feeble on this Memorial Day, for the site before us is that of a strong and good nation that stands in silence and remembers those who were loved and who, in return, loved their countrymen enough to die for them. Yet, we must try to honor them, not for their sakes alone, but for our own. And if words cannot repay the debt we owe these men, surely with our actions, we must strive to keep faith with them and with a vision that led them to battle and a final sacrifice.

In a team effort with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Green Forest Police Department, Arkansas Division of Community Correction, and the Harrison Police Department, there was a recovery of approximately $25,000 in stolen property following this multi-agency investigation involving advanced law enforcement technology, surveillance footage, and coordinated field operations. The investigation began on May 13, 2026, after employees at Andy Yeager Motors reported a stolen 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 valued at approximately $19,000.00. The dealership employees provided security footage and evidence showing the vehicle had been taken from the lot during overnight hours.

Detectives quickly identified Samuel McLeod as a suspect after reviewing surveillance footage. Detectives later analyzed vehicle information and utilized other technologies available to law enforcement of the Harrison Police Department. One of the systems allowed officers to track a Dodge Ram registered to McLeod and compare distinctive features from his actual vehicle and the alleged stolen vehicle, including bumper changes, rear window modifications, and the removal of the manufacturer’s emblem from the tailgate. Additional evidence was obtained through another law enforcement source, which showed McLeod transporting scrap metal in a vehicle matching the stolen truck.

On May 14, 2026, officers from the Harrison Police Department, the Arkansas Division of Community Correction, and the Boone County Sheriff's Office executed a search at McLeod’s residence in Omaha, Arkansas. After being confronted with evidence gathered through surveillance and law enforcement technologies, McLeod confessed to stealing the vehicle and cooperated with law enforcement in locating the stolen vehicle. During the investigation, officers also uncovered evidence connected to the theft of two (2) Cub Cadet zero-turn mowers stolen from The Home Depot of Harrison. Surveillance footage, communications information, cellphone evidence, and additional law enforcement technology images linked McLeod to the thefts and the transportation of the stolen equipment.

On May 20, 2026, law enforcement executed a search warrant with the assistance of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Green Forest Police Department, resulting in the recovery of both stolen mowers: a Cub Cadet 42-inch zero-turn mower and a second mower stolen days later. Combined with the recovered Dodge Ram truck, the total value of recovered property is estimated at approximately $25,000.00. Detectives of the Harrison Police Department credited some of the law enforcement technologies as critical tools in quickly identifying the suspect, locating stolen properties, and assisting in the successful recovery effort. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional stolen property may still be recovered.

The Harrison Police Department has been notified of a scam that is trying to con you into sending your rental deposit. Be wise and don't let this happen to you.

While searching for a new place to live in Boone County, Be careful! Scammers are getting clever by stealing photos from legitimate MLS and real estate websites to create fake rental listings.

Protect your hard-earned money by keeping an eye out for these Common Scam Red Flags:

📉 "Too Good to Be True" Pricing: The rent is listed way below local market rates.

✈️ The "Out of Town" Landlord: They claim they are traveling, working overseas, or just "out of the area" and can't show you the home in person.

🚫 No Inside Access: They refuse to let you tour the inside, or tell you to just "look through the windows."

💸 Unusual Payment Methods: They pressure you to pay via wire transfer, Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, or even gift cards.

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself: Your Action Steps
Before you hand over any money or application fees, follow these verification steps:

Never pay blind: Never wire money, use peer-to-peer apps, or provide a security deposit before viewing the inside of the property in person and verifying ownership.

Verify the Address: Copy the address and search it on platforms to verify. If it's listed for sale by a local, licensed agent but listed for rent on Craigslist or Facebook, it’s likely a scam.

Do a Reverse Image Search: Drop the listing photos into Google Images to see if they were pulled from a completely different property or website.

⚠️ Bottom Line: If a "landlord" demands cash or a digital transfer before they've even unlocked the front door for you, walk away!
