Ride Smart. Ride Legal. Ride Safe.
Harrison Police Department Safety Reminder: E-Bikes & E-Scooters
We get it - these are fun, but there are rules!
As warmer weather arrives, Harrison residents are increasingly using e-bikes and e-scooters for transportation and recreation. These devices can be convenient and fun — but they also come with legal requirements and safety.
• Must be age 16 or older to operate on public roadways
• Obey stop signs, traffic lights, and traffic rules (including yielding to pedestrians)
• Generally, operation and riding are limited to roadways with a posted limit of 30 mph or less
• Helmets are strongly encouraged by all riders, and legally required in most cases
• E-Scooters... one rider only (no passengers)
Parents: Before purchasing or allowing use of’ an e-bike or e-scooter, please ensure your child understands the law and can operate responsibly.
Because nobody wants their summer story to start with: “So then the Harrison Police showed up...”
Our goal is education, safety, and preventing injuries — not spoiling anyone’s day.

The Harrison Police Department mourns alongside our brothers and sisters of the Harrison Fire Department on the loss of Firefighter Kenneth J. Fusco.

A dedicated firefighter, 9/11 responder, mentor, and friend to so many, Kenny embodied selfless service and unwavering commitment to the Harrison community for decades. He was the type of man who would help anyone without hesitation, and his impact on this community will never be forgotten.

We honor his sacrifice, recognize this tremendous loss, and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Harrison Fire Department.

Rest easy, Kenny. Thank you for your service, your courage, and your kindness.

Statement from Harrison Fire Department on the Passing of Firefighter Kenneth J. Fusco.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Firefighter Kenneth J Fusco, a dedicated member of the Harrison Fire Department. He died on May 18, 2026 after a courageous battle with 911 related illnesses from his service at the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Firefighter Fusco proudly served the Harrison Fire Department for 45 years. On September 11th and in the months that followed, he selflessly worked at Ground Zero in the rescue and recovery efforts, breathing in the toxic dust and debris that would later claim so many lives including his. His commitment to duty and to the people of Harrison exemplified the very best of our profession.
The long term effects of exposure to the World Trade Center toxins ultimately took his life. Today we recognize this loss as a line-of-duty death, another painful reminder that the attacks of 9/11 continue to claim members of the fire service long after the towers fell.
On behalf of the entire Harrison Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to his entire family and all those who loved him. We stand with you in grief and will continue to support you in the days and months ahead.
Firefighter Fusco will be remembered not only for his bravery on 9/11, but for a lifetime of service, mentorship, and brotherhood within the fire service. He was a pillar in the Harrison community and touched many lives with his kind heart and generous nature.
As we continue to lose brave firefighters to 9/11 related illnesses, we are reminded of our duty to those still fighting. We urge continued full funding of the World Trade Center Health Program to ensure every responder receives the care they earned and deserve.
Firefighter Fusco will forever be part of our department’s history and our collective memory. We will never forget.

The Harrison Police Department extends our sincere gratitude to Mayor Tom Scappaticci for his recent newsletters recognizing the outstanding work of our School Resource Officers (SROs).

Our SROs play a vital role in the Harrison Community, going beyond their responsibility of ensuring school safety. They serve as mentors, educators, and trusted role models, fostering positive relationships with students and helping to build trust between youth and law enforcement. Through daily interactions, classroom presentations, and guidance during critical moments, these officers create a supportive environment where students feel safe, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Their presence not only helps prevent and respond to emergencies but also encourages open communication, promotes positive decision-making, and inspires confidence in the next generation. The bonds they form with students often leave a lasting impression that extends well beyond the classroom, strengthening the overall fabric of our community.

We are proud to recognize the dedicated officers serving in our schools:
* P.O. Joseph Parrello – Harrison High School
* P.O. Robert Budde – Louis M. Klein Middle School
* P.O. Michael Carelli – Parsons Elementary School
* P.O. Frank Luongo – Preston Elementary School
* P.O. William Detlefs – Purchase Elementary School
* P.O. Robert Longo – Harrison Avenue School

We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to P.O. Robert Budde and P.O. Joseph Parrello as they prepare for their well-earned retirements. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment to the youth of Harrison and the Harrison community during their career have left an enduring legacy that will be felt for generations.

🚔🚑 Safety Day at Harrison Avenue School 🚲

The Harrison Police Department was proud to partner with Harrison EMS to provide a fun and educational Safety Day for students at Harrison Avenue School. HAS Resource Officer Robbie Longo, Community Resource Officer Mike DiSante and Harrison EMS Paramedic Justin Bayer worked together to teach students about public safety and community resources.

Throughout the day, students rotated through interactive stations that highlighted:
• 🚓 The role of the Harrison Police Department
• 🚲 Bicycle Unit demonstrations and bicycle safety
• 🚑 Emergency medical services with hands-on learning inside an EMS ambulance

Special thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success and to the students for their enthusiasm and participation. We are grateful for the opportunity to strengthen our connection with the community and promote safety in a fun, engaging way!

April is distracted driving awareness month. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention away from safe driving. Distracted driving, mainly cell phone use, remains a major contributor to serious and fatal crashes. It is dangerous, it is illegal, and it puts everyone on the road at risk.

Our officers will increase enforcement during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. If you drive distracted, you
will face the consequences.

Safe driving can be adopted by these phone-free driving habits:
• Pull over and park in a safe location before using the phone to send or read a text message.
• Ask a passenger to be the “designated texter” and allow them to manage calls and messages
during the drive.
• Avoid social media scrolling and any form of messaging while behind the wheel.
• Use “Do Not Disturb” mode to silence notifications.

A split-second glance can turn into flashing lights or an emergency.
