Harrison Fire Department Responds to Three -Alarm Structure Fire on North Fifth Street

At approximately 220 AM on Friday, July 17, Harrison Fire Department Tour 2 companies—Ladder 1, Engine 2, Engine 4, and Battalion 2—were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 310 North Fifth Street in the Town of Harrison.

While units were responding, dispatch advised Battalion 2 (Chief Cavanagh) that Harrison Police officers on scene had confirmed heavy smoke and flames showing from the structure. Based on this information, Chief Cavanagh immediately requested the Working Fire Assignment, initiating the response of mutual aid resources from the Kearny Fire Department.

Harrison units arrived simultaneously and encountered heavy fire showing from both floors of the residence at 310 North Fifth Street. The fire had also begun extending to the adjacent exposure buildings at 308 North Fifth Street (Bravo exposure) and 312 North Fifth Street (Delta exposure).

Engine 4 immediately stretched an attack line into the primary fire building to initiate an interior fire attack, while Engine 2 deployed handlines to protect the adjacent exposure buildings from the advancing fire. Ladder 1 conducted primary searches for occupants and pets, performed ventilation operations, and placed ground ladders around the structure to support firefighting efforts.

As fire conditions continued to intensify, Chief Cavanagh transmitted a Second Alarm, bringing additional personnel and apparatus to the scene. Firefighters from the Kearny Fire Department and Jersey City Fire Department advanced attack lines into the Delta exposure and worked to extinguish the fire while preventing further extension. A Third alarm was called for to provide additional manpower to the scene.

Firefighters operated on scene through the early morning hours with the assistance of mutual aid departments, including the East Newark Fire Department, Bayonne Fire Department, and North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue, which provided both on-scene support and fire coverage throughout the Town of Harrison during the incident.

Two residents from the primary fire building were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. One Kearny firefighter sustained a laceration to the hand and was also transported to a local hospital for treatment. Tragically, one family dog was unable to be rescued and was lost in the fire.

The Harrison Fire Department extends its sincere gratitude to all of the mutual aid departments whose professionalism, dedication, and teamwork were instrumental in bringing this incident under control. As well as our brothers and sister in blue who bravely assisted in house evacuations and scene control.

We also extend our thoughts and support to the residents displaced by this fire and wish those who were injured a full and speedy recovery. At this time there is a go fund made by private citizens for anyone looking to help those in need.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Any questions or concerns please contact the office of the fire chief at HFD fire headquarters.
