Harrisonburg Northend Greenway

Harrisonburg Northend Greenway Good for you. Good for the 'Burg.

Harrisonburg’s Northend Greenway is an initiative to connect our community through an attractive and safe network of biking and walking paths. These off-road greenways will connect neighborhoods, schools and businesses with the downtown district, and will be easily accessible to all residents and visitors especially children, families and seniors. Our mission is to model accessible and attractive

public infrastructure that enables affordable, healthy, sustainable, and safe transportation and recreation options in Harrisonburg.

We are delighted to invite you to our Northend Greenway Fall event. While we (and the City and the selected contractor) have been busy moving the Greenway forward and while we are getting closer and closer to the construction stage, it isn't quite time to celebrate yet. But we would like to update the community about the progress that's been made and to celebrate a new book by one of our very own steering committee members.

A Harrisonburg resident, JMU history professor, and (as The New Yorker wrote in its recent review) "demon researcher," Evan Friss has just published a book about the history of cycling in American cities. It was his historical interest in the subject that initially drew him to the Northend Greenway and we've been lucky to draw on his expertise. So please join us for an evening of celebration, bike-filled conversation, and complimentary beer. We look forward to catching you up on all that's new with the Greenway.

Harrisonburg citizens who live on the northern side of the city have long been frustrated with the lack of safe pedestrian and bicycle lanes to access the downtown. With the advent of the North End Greenway, that frustration should soon be at end.

The Northend Greenway is becoming a reality!

After reaffirming the long-envisioned route for the Northend Greenway and the $1.2 million in Virginia DOT and matching funds for that path, the city of Harrisonburg appropriated another $854,000 for the project from last year's budget surplus. This provides enough funding to complete the stretch of path from the intersection of Mt. Clinton Pike and Virginia Avenue to the end of Suter Street near North Liberty Street. The funds also provide a start to funding for Phase 2 of the project. Engineering firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. has been chosen for the job.

For more details on this and the city's timeline for completing Phase 1 of the Northend Greenway, please see the city's website.

The Northend Greenway is envisioned to be a 2.5-mile shared use path connecting people in north Harrisonburg with places they want to go. From Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, to residential neighborhoods, Eastern Mennonite University, Eastern Mennonite School, community centers, and more.
