The mission of the Public Works Department is to enhance the quality of life of our citizens by providing efficient public services, protecting the public interest with good environmental policies, enforcing codes, and constructing, operating, and maintaining the City's infrastructure. With nearly 100 employees, the Public Works Department strives to enhance the quality of life of our citizens by

providing an efficient collection of refuse, point of deposit for recyclable items, maintenance of city streets, maintenance of traffic signals and street signs, transportation planning, improving the connectivity of bicycling and walking paths, championing environmental initiatives including stormwater management, creating a pollinator corridor, and restoring the health of Blacks Run and the City's urban tree canopy, and construction of new transportation facilities, all while encouraging our community to responsibly and sustainably use our available resources.

June is Pollinator Month! And we have a special First Friday exhibit opening this Friday, June 5 to celebrate!

"Pollinator Friendly City" features photos of pollinators taken around City buildings and framed from wood through Harrisonburg’s Urban Wood Program.

The opening reception is from 5:00pm-7:00pm on Friday, June 5 in the lobby of City Hall.

Please Be Aware:

Paving work will take place on Stone Spring Road between the bridge crossing I-81 and the city limits beginning Wednesday, June 3, and continuing through Thursday, June 11, between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Thursday. Lane closures will be required while paving work is taking place. The road will remain open to through traffic, but delays should be expected.

Chris has been with Public Works since January 2022. He enjoys the team effort in his department and communicating with the public. Chris takes pride in helping the City stay safe, clean, and livable by responding to community concerns, checking properties for compliance, and coordinating with Public Works crews.
