At Open Doors, our Shelter Support Specialists are at the heart of our shelter operations. They take on many responsibilities that help keep our emergency shelter running smoothly each day.

For many of our guests, Support Specialists are some of the first faces they see and the people they interact with most often. They serve as advocates, guides, and a steady source of support throughout each guest’s stay.

Their work helps create the welcoming environment that defines Open Doors and reflects our core values every day:

The Harrisonburg Rockingham Page Reentry Council (HRPRC) Resource Fair is happening this Thursday, May 21st, from 11 AM–2 PM at the Navigation Center.

Join us to learn more about reentry services available in our community. If you’re wondering whether these supports might be helpful for you, we encourage you to stop by and take a look. Everyone is welcome, whether it’s your first time or you’ve attended before, you’re always invited to come back and connect.

The Point-in-Time Count (PIT), conducted by the Western Virginia Continuum of Care, provides a snapshot of individuals experiencing homelessness in our community.

This year’s data found that 78% of individuals experiencing homelessness were sheltered, either in emergency shelters or domestic violence shelters. Open Doors plays a significant role in supporting this number, housing up to 80 individuals each night.

In 2024, prior to the opening of the Navigation Center, 74% of individuals were sheltered. The growth of Open Doors has allowed us to support many more neighbors in need and create measurable impact in our community.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Mental health and well-being are important for everyone. They impact how we think, feel, and navigate daily life. We share some common mental health tips you can do daily to support your well-being. Swipe to see some tips!

But for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, many of these strategies are not always accessible. Safe sleep, space to rest, time, stability, and resources can be limited or out of reach.

At Open Doors, we recognize these barriers and are working to help close the gap through our Shelter Mental Health Partnership, with onsite counseling to expand access to care and support for those who need it most.
