Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Inc.

100% Volunteer, 100% of the Time. Always welcoming motivated and dedicated members. We offer new member training, EVOC certification, and many other EMS courses.

Harrisonburg Rescue Squad is a volunteer agency that provides service to Harrisonburg and parts of Rockingham County. HRS owns and maintains a full fleet complete with ambulances, response vehicles, a Heavy Rescue Vehicle, and a Mass Casualty Incident Response Unit. R40 has approximately 200 active volunteer members and responds to over 9,000 calls-for-service per year. The volunteers take pride in the ability to provide extensive life-saving services to the local community.

Harrisonburg Rescue Squad’s membership spotlight for the month of August is our senior member, Morgan Sadowski!

Morgan joined HRS in January 2023 to make an impact within the community, explore a potential career in Emergency Medicine, and become part of an agency that places a strong emphasis on training. During her time with HRS, Morgan completed the required training to be released as both a Driver and Attendant-in-Charge (AIC). She also serves as a Uniform Officer and is a member of the Membership Committee! Morgan also volunteers as both a Driving and BLS Preceptor, helping train and mentor newer members.

When asked about her favorite aspects of Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Morgan highlighted the lifelong friendships she has made through the agency. She also remembers using the station as a study location while in nursing school while also answering calls during her study sessions. Morgan credits her time at HRS with teaching her how to become a better healthcare provider and how to more effectively communicate with patients and their families during some of their most difficult moments.

At HRS, Morgan hopes to continue helping with precepting and mentoring newer members as she enjoys helping members grow their skills. Morgan also assists with uniform duties and sits on the membership committee. Outside of HRS, Morgan plans to continue working as an emergency room nurse while pursuing her Certified Emergency Nurse and Certified Trauma Nurse certifications.

Originally from Virginia Beach, Morgan now lives in Fairfax, Virginia. She graduated from the nursing program at James Madison University in May 2025 and currently works as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Inova Fairfax. Outside of HRS and work, Morgan enjoys playing volleyball, traveling, attending sporting events, going to Pilates, and spending time with family and friends.

Harrisonburg Rescue Squad’s membership spotlight for the month of July is our senior member, Matt Rowe!

Matt joined HRS in September 2022 to gain experience in the medical field while studying at JMU. During his time with the agency, Matt completed the rigorous training to be released as both an Attendant-in-Charge (AIC) and Driver. In addition to serving the community as an AIC, Matt also volunteers his time as both a BLS and Driver Preceptor.

When asked about his favorite aspect of Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Matt stated, “The people and the constant learning I still get on calls.” He explained that the wide range of healthcare experience among HRS members means he learns something new every shift, and that the unpredictable nature of EMS keeps him engaged and excited to volunteer. Matt also credits his time at HRS with teaching him that making a difference is not always about saving a life, but often about being there for someone during their most vulnerable moments. Through the agency, he has learned how to lead as a primary provider, work effectively as part of a team, and recognize that small acts of compassion can have just as much impact as the medical care he provides.

As a BLS and driver Preceptor, Matt enjoys providing thoughtful feedback and training to new members, continuing the mentorship that previous preceptors provided to him. Matt plans to continue volunteering while attending medical school and hopes to earn his paramedic certification.

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Matt is beginning medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University this July. Outside of HRS and school, he enjoys walking and running throughout Richmond, spending time with family and friends, and exploring Virginian history. Matt also shares that the lifelong friendships he has built at HRS made it his favorite experience during his time at James Madison University.

Harrisonburg Rescue Squad is incredibly grateful for Matt’s dedication to the agency, commitment to training new members, and passion for serving the community. We are excited to see all he accomplishes throughout medical school and beyond, and we know he has a bright future ahead. Thank you, Matt, for your service!

June Membership Spotlight!

Harrisonburg Rescue Squad’s membership spotlight for the month of June is our senior member Emmy Voegtlin!

Emmy joined HRS in March 2022 after hearing “such positive things” about the agency from former members. Since joining HRS, Emmy progressed quickly through her training as both a Driver and Attendant-in-Charge (AIC) and now serves as both a Driver and AIC Preceptor, helping to guide and mentor new members through the training process.

When asked about her favorite aspects of Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Emmy stated “the people and the insane amount of knowledge between providers.” She shared that working alongside career fire and EMS personnel, flight crews, nurses, physician assistants, and physicians has taught her an incredible amount throughout her time at the agency. Emmy also appreciates the culture of continuous learning at HRS, noting that it is common to see both new and experienced members “engaging in education, training, and team development.” Reflecting on her time at the rescue squad, Emmy says one of the most important lessons she has learned is that “everyone has something to teach you,” a mindset that continues to shape both her personal and professional growth.

Emmy can often be found helping newer members navigate their training and release processes. One of her goals within the agency is to continue expanding her own knowledge while helping her preceptees progress and gain confidence as providers. Looking toward the future, she hopes to continue serving as an educator and mentor within the agency and is considering advancing to a Duty Officer role or obtaining her paramedic certification.

Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Emmy graduated from JMU in 2024 and recently completed her master’s degree in physiology. Outside of HRS, she works at UVA Outpatient Cardiology. When she is not serving the community or helping train new members, Emmy enjoys running, reading, and spending time with her family.

Emmy’s dedication to learning, mentorship, and service has made her an invaluable part of Harrisonburg Rescue Squad. Emmy says she “can’t recommend joining enough,” and we are grateful that she chose to dedicate her time to Harrisonburg Rescue Squad and the surrounding community. We appreciate all that you do, Emmy, and look forward to seeing what the future holds for you!
