Hear ye, hear ye 📣 the new kid’s castle at Purcell Park is opening on Tuesday, September 1! We’ve heard the comments- everyone misses playgrounds from the 80’s and 90’s with tall obstacles, steep slides, and interesting challenges. This new playground has a catapult, multiple slides, rope crossings, and many more safe, yet challenging, obstacles. Take it from Sgt. Westfall- it is GenX approved!

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for Kids Castle is coming up, and we know you’re as excited as we are! To make sure everyone is able to attend the celebration and take part in the fun, visitors should utilize the Harrisonburg Parks & Rec parking lot located behind Funky’s Skate Center and only a few steps away from the new Kids Castle Playground at Purcell Park. Please check this parking lot first as parking at the Monument Avenue lots will be limited during this event. We look forward to seeing you Tuesday!

Who’s ready? We are almost there and the playground and surrounding grounds look amazing! Just a reminder that Kids Castle’s Grand Opening Ceremony is on Tuesday, September 1 at 10:00am. The playground will then be open full time for public use.

We know you’ve got a need for speed, but playgrounds might not be the best spot for opening up the throttle! That’s why we’ve decided to no longer allow the use of electric bikes (e-bikes) or other electric-powered devices such as some types of scooters and skateboards around Harrisonburg Parks & Rec playgrounds. Some of these e-bikes can reach significant speeds, leading to the potential for collisions that could be serious for riders and others enjoying the space. We want everyone to have a fun – and safe – experience when they visit A Dream Come True Playground, Kids Castle and other spots around town. Families should instead consider visiting our Bluestone Trail, Friendly City Trail and Northend Greenway as safer spaces to ride (at a reasonable speed!). Please be cautious and courteous of others when enjoying these paths that are also popular with people walking and jogging. And, of course, e-bike enthusiasts should be sure to take part in our upcoming Parks & Rec Master Plan to let us know what new amenities, programs and events you’d like to see us focus on in the future. Again, at this time, this only applies to playgrounds and their corresponding cycletracks.

We are in need of a quite a few youth soccer coaches for our fall season that starts in September. Divisions include Girls U5/U6, Boys U5, and Boys U13. Girls will play Monday/Wednesday evenings, boys will play Tuesday/Thursday evening (U13 has Saturday morning games). If we don't get coaches by the start on September 8, some seasons may need to be delayed. If interested, contact [email protected].
